    Marcia

I'm a stay-at-home-mom who, as part of a mid-life challenge, decided to run a marathon for kicks. I didn't plan on it becoming a hobby, but it did. I QUALIFIED FOR BOSTON at my second marathon and slipped into the vortex. Join me as I fulfill my dream of running the five marathon majors.

Stylish Blogger Award

Categories: Uncategorized

What are the chances I’d be awarded this esteemed honor just hours after showing you my sweet new jacket? Thank you Rose!

Here are the rules:
1. Link back to the person who awarded this to you.
2. Tell us 7 things about you.
3. Select 5 recently discovered bloggers to pass this onto.
4. Let them know they’ve been selected.

7 Things:

1. My decision to run A marathon back in 2007 has resulted in 6 so far:
Chicago, 2007
Grand Rapids, 2008
Boston, 2009
Columbus, 2009
Boston, 2010
Chicago, 2010
There will be more if I have my way.

2. I’m in a relationship with Ghirardelli bittersweet baking pieces. The 3pm rendezvous need to end. Sure dark chocolate is healthy, but not when you consume your weight in it.

3. In another life I was 50 lbs heavier. I found a pic too. I’ll post it as soon as I figure out this darn scanner.

4. The aha moment came at the DMV of all places when the guy at the counter looked at my license and asked “Did you want to change anything on here?” In my mind, what I heard him say was “There’s no way a fat sack like you weighs 120″.

5. My workouts of choice while the first 35 pounds came off were step aerobics, stairmaster and weight training. I credit running with the final 15 pounds.  I well remember how my knees ached when I was heavier.

6. Qualifying for Boston was a defining moment for me because it’s something I considered way beyond my abilities. When it happened, relatively quickly in my ‘running career’, it made me realize I’d been setting the bar too low for myself. Not just in running but in life.

7. I’m incredulous when a size small fits me. In my mind I see myself often as still large.

Ok, now to pass this on:
Noel at Grammie Gets A life
Julie at Adventure is out there
Jeff at Detroit Runner
Andrew at Running Man Wannabe
Terri at Our Big Fat Greek Marathon

It’s 1/11/11!
That’s gotta be a good thing right?

Freeze your Thorns Off: Virtual Race Report

Categories: Newton, Sub-Zero Running, Sugoi, Virtual Race

January races are pretty scarce in these parts. So I jumped at the chance to participate in Adam @ I am Boring’s Virtual 5k. Who doesn’t have a few thorns they want/need to freeze off?

I was up and out bright and early: heavy overcast, icy snow on the ground.

Temp? Minus 2
Wind chill? Minus 12

Now maybe a saner, more rational being would have opted for the mill.

Not me.

I have a new jacket.
And new shoes.

How many of you can say that?
Well maybe you can but my new jacket and shoes fly right in the face of my inner tightwad.

The jacket, the Sugoi Firewall in Imperial (as in running royalty) purple. It had been hanging in a local running store window for weeks now flirting with me every time I passed. In a moment of weakness, what can I say? I succumbed to it’s advances.

As much as I wanted to give these bad girls a whirl, I went with my trusty yet clunky trail shoes.
I layered up, woke Thing 1 for a quick pic and off I went to prance across the permafrost.
I’ll admit, despite what the running store guy said about the jacket, I had my doubts about it’s wind resistance. It’s surface texture is not nylony. But I have to say I was toasty without being overheated.

Frozen finish time: 24:49

Certainly not my fastest, but the fact that I maintained an upright posture across the tundra warrants a bonus time allowance I’m sure. It does right? What it doesn’t? Ok well then lets talk about style points.
