July Recap/August Goals

Categories: Gardening, July Recap, Trail Running, Training in heat, Weight Loss

Miles run: 113 This is the most I’ve run since July 2011, when I ran 114.

Miles run on trails: 50

Cycling miles: 60

Speed sessions: 4

Plyometric workouts: 4

Strength/corework sessions: 9

Hill workouts: 1

Workouts missed: 0

Birthdays celebrated: 2

Birthday cakes baked: 3 + 24 cupcakes

Races: 1 (RnR Chi)

Pool days: Lots. Too bad there’s not a workout of any kind happening here, unless you count endless games of Marco Polo.

Pounds gained/lost:  -0.6 since July 1. Let the record show there was a fluctuation of 2.8 lbs. during the month of July. Blame it on the birthday cake. Oh and those pesky Frappucinos.

Challenges:

Weather: I’ve done more mill running than I would like because of the heat. Not complaining though. Grateful to have the luxury of a treadmill.

Garden: It’s been hard to keep our community garden watered in the heat. Seems like everything is behind in growth. We’ve picked just a dozen or so grape tomatoes and some snap peas so far.

Olympics: As much as I adore watching, I’m staying up way too late, which makes getting up for early morning workouts harder than it has to be.

Daylight: My beloved early morning light is fading fast. Boo!

August Goals

  • Lose 5 lbs. I’d still be a couple of pounds over BQ weight but it’s a start.
  • Make it through two 20-milers in one piece with minimal whining
  • More hill training to prep for Denver RnR next month and Zooma Great Lakes in October.
  • Navigate through back-to-school schedule changes without missing workouts
  • Once the kids are back in school, get to the gym for yoga and spin classes

How did July shake out for you? What’s exciting in August?

  1. Melissa says:

Great month Marcia! You have some killer calf muscles too, lol! July was a great but intense month for me…August will be a bit lighter, hehe. Oh, and I am totally staying up way too late too because of the Olympics! At least its only for 2 weeks though. ;)

  2. The cakes you make all look so freaking awesome.

Awesome job on getting all of those miles in despite the heat!

  3. Kathy R says:

Great job this month … my July was the next opposite – not boding well for Detroit in October – need to tighten things up a tad!
Excited that you’ll be out here for Denver RnR!! I plan on being out on the course offering support with my running group – I’ll keep you posted on while mile we get!
Blogger get together next month??? I think so!!

  4. Lisa J says:

my july was highest mileage month in over a year as well- weird bc its hotter.
adding pool days to your recap is GENIUS, i should do that for august

  5. C2Iowa says:

Great goals and a good month. Well done.

  6. Caroline says:

my July: trying to recover from groin injury
my August: looking forward to HOOD TO COAST!!!!!!

  7. Johann says:

    “Workouts missed: 0″ Impressive!
My July was good and I enjoyed three races. August is a hard trail training month for me with a very hard 35km mountain race on the 18th. All is part of training for my next big race on 8 Sept.

  8. Morgan says:

Great job this month! And look out August, here she comes!!!

  9. Sandy says:

Looks like you had a great month. Hats off to you for not missing any workouts! I had a record month in July as far as mileage so I am excited about that!

  10. Terzah says:

    July: best month since January!
August: continue the Comeback of 2012 (such as it is)

It sounds like you’re having a great summer, heat be damned. I don’t lament the morning light leaving. It means it will be cooler, someday. I promise not to complain about the cold when it comes.

  11. One freaking AWESOME race! Great goals, girl :)

  12. misszippy1 says:

Look at you with zero workouts missed! Way to go.

I can’t even believe it’s time to start thinking back to school. This has been my favorite summer with the kids so far–not ready for it to end!

  13. hikermom says:

Wow, no missed workouts?! You are awesome! My tomatoes aren’t doing too hot either:( I have only been able to pick one stinkin tomato. But here, it’s not enough sun. Go figure.

  14. Ali Mc says:

Looks like a busy month!!!! I can’t believe you ran the most this month AND did all that other stuff :) you’re amazing!!

and BQ? is that boston qualifying?? and there’s a weight limit??

  15. Zero missed workouts- nice work! I agree that the treadmill is not ideal, but it’s a great way to get those extra miles in on hot days. Hard to believe it’s August… didn’t summer just begin?

  16. Looks like a great month, Marcia! Congrats! I’m with you on this crazy heat – and humidity. It’s killing me!

  17. Emz says:

    you rock.
    I love this.
    Love the miles.
    Love followiing you on Instagram.
Love that you love the trails.

    awesome.

  18. kilax says:

So funny! Everyone is staying up too late watching the Olympics! (including me!!!)

We struggled big time keeping our community garden watered. That is part of the reason we didn’t do it this year :(

  19. You’re so impressive being a momma and such a solid runner!! I have started doing my tempo runs on the mill to control it more – I think it is paying off. Exciting for August for me includes beach time and being a MOH in my best friends wedding – it trumps my excitement for running :)

  20. Meghan says:

Those are some impressive numbers, lady! Keep up the awesome work!

My July FINALLY brought me a return to running, post-injury. I am so looking forward to amping up the mileage (slowly, of course) this month!

  21. Suzanne says:

Very impressive mileage especially the miles you logged on the trail! Good luck reaching all of your goals in August!

  22. Jill says:

Excellent July, girl!! I so need to do more hills. I ran the teeny hill today for my triathlon on Sunday and I almost puked – I’ve lost all hill strength. And endurance. And speed. And let’s not talk about weight – bleh! Here’s to a great August!

  23. Molly says:

nice job nailing all your workouts!! I wish pool time counted for something too : ) I’m going to join you in your five pound weight loss in August, but I’ve got to lose ten! : )

  24. Kate says:

You did GREAT getting in all those miles with the crazy heat and other stuff going on! Very impressive.

MY July, on the other hand…very sedentary compared to what I’m used to. Bleh.

  25. lindsay says:

still a net loss overall! those darn cupcakes… and fraps. i mean, you need something to get through the heat right?

love the oly’s but it is tough staying up so late :-/ makes me not mind all the spoilers from the news because then i already know what happened and can fall sleep without ‘worrying’ about missing it. though, it is kind of a bummer to watch and already know the outcome.

  26. MMM, frappuccinos. So good, yet so bad.

You have done great with your training so far! You’ll rock August!

  27. You had a great month! And I so hear you about staying up too late to watch the Olympics…I’ve been dragging myself out of bed to beat the heat and it hasn’t always been pretty :)

  28. Char says:

The Olympics is playing havoc with everyone’s sleep. I stay up late to see the heats then get up at stupid-o’clock to watch the finals. You can pick a sports-lover by the number of bags under their eyes.

  29. Mandy says:

July sounds like it was a great month!
I like your goals for August – the minimal whining part made me smile! :)
