Freeze your Thorns Off: Virtual Race Report

Categories: Newton, Sub-Zero Running, Sugoi, Virtual Race

January races are pretty scarce in these parts. So I jumped at the chance to participate in Adam @ I am Boring’s Virtual 5k. Who doesn’t have a few thorns they want/need to freeze off?

I was up and out bright and early: heavy overcast, icy snow on the ground.

Temp? Minus 2
Wind chill? Minus 12

Now maybe a saner, more rational being would have opted for the mill.

Not me.

I have a new jacket.
And new shoes.

How many of you can say that?
Well maybe you can but my new jacket and shoes fly right in the face of my inner tightwad.

The jacket, the Sugoi Firewall in Imperial (as in running royalty) purple. It had been hanging in a local running store window for weeks now flirting with me every time I passed. In a moment of weakness, what can I say? I succumbed to it’s advances.

As much as I wanted to give these bad girls a whirl, I went with my trusty yet clunky trail shoes.
I layered up, woke Thing 1 for a quick pic and off I went to prance across the permafrost.
I’ll admit, despite what the running store guy said about the jacket, I had my doubts about it’s wind resistance. It’s surface texture is not nylony. But I have to say I was toasty without being overheated.

Frozen finish time: 24:49

Certainly not my fastest, but the fact that I maintained an upright posture across the tundra warrants a bonus time allowance I’m sure. It does right? What it doesn’t? Ok well then lets talk about style points.
