Runners are Way Ahead of the Fashion Police

February 10, 2015

Flipping through the March issue of Glamour Magazine (I know, don’t ask) this morning I came upon one of my favorite things: Dos and Don’ts. The section on “Don’ts that are now Dos” caught my eye. According to the fashion gods at Glamour, the following are now fashion DOs:

  • High waisted pants
  • The intentionally visible bra
  • Mixing Navy and Black

Call me fashion forward (or a dork, you decide) but as a runner I looked at this list and said to myself, this is news? These have always been running “Dos” in my book.

tucked in

High waist: Who doesn’t have a pair of running tights with a high waist? All the better to keep the gut warm on those polar long runs, right? Plus the trusty base layer stays nice and tucked in. Now there’s a look for the runway. This look gets mega eye rolls from my kids. Poor things have no clue how ‘high fashion’ I am.

lornajanecollage

Here’s a whole collage of bra-hanging-out goodness.

Visible Bra: I’m not sure I’m intentional about this, it’s probably more that I simply don’t care if my bra is hanging out under a singlet. As long as the girls are happy and there’s no chafing, the more color, prints, strappiness etc., the better. There’ll be no black ‘don’t’ rectangle over my face!

navy collage

Navy/Black: As a runner I rock this look all the time. Exhibit A: This half zip in Chicago Bears navy/orange (that I HAD to have circa 2006 when the Nike Woman store was a thing. Remember that? Kind of bummed it’s no more). I don’t hesitate to throw black tights (yes my chic, high-waisted ones) on with this number. Exhibit B: This jacket has navy accents. Do you think I’m ALWAYS going to wear navy tights or capris with it? If you answered no, you’d be right.

While I have yet to embrace these trends in my ‘civilian’ fashion choices, as a runner, apparently I’m way more stylish than I realized. How about you: Do you embrace any of these fashion trends? Do you get eye rolls from your kids?

I have one pair of uber high tights and actually they are probably my favorites because the low ones, even though they are tight tights tend to creep down (which may cause the ultimate fashion mistake – plumbers crack). I also tend to get dressed to run as fast as I can and 1/2 a mile down the road notice that nothing I’m wearing matches. I just figure it’s my natural instinct to look obnoxious to avoid getting hit by a car!

Do them all. I guess I am stylish!

I really, really dislike visible bras with street clothes, I think it’s tacky. But for running, I’m right out there with it and agree that the more colorful and strappy, the better! 🙂

Haha! I love this! I always say, “If you can’t be the fastest, you might as well be the most stylish.” #growyourbloghop

I can’t say I like my high-waisted running tights, but I have them. Of course my sports bra is always hanging out of my tank top. And the color combos us runners come up with are always interesting! But not sure I’ll be following any of these trends outside of running:)

Smitha I think being chic makes you faster…just saying…

It’s funny, I didn’t even know navy and black weren’t supposed to go together until now haha!

I think I get perpetual eye rolls from my kids on my clothes, my hair, etc. And here I thought I was a hip 49-yr old!

I’m with you on the bra straps, IF it is a sports bra. I know all the younger gals wear their regular bra straps hanging out, but I just can’t do it. I guess I always go with age appropriate in everyday fashion. Or I’m a prude?

As to the high-waisted pants/tights. It took me so long to get on board with low-waisted things and now I really love them. Ok, not low, but mid. I don’t want high-waisted back!

Haha, I love this! I haven’t read a fashion mag in a while but apparently I am also very stylish as well with my showing sports bra and all 😉

I hope that high waisted jeans aren’t going to make a comeback.
Thankfully I don’t really get eye rolls since I have boys – they don’t really care. I do think Jordan doesn’t like me to be at the swim beach in my bikini if he is there with friends – weird!!!

I think all rules do not apply when it comes to us runners. who cares what we look like when we run. At least we are out there doing it.

No high-waisted tights for me. I can’t stand the feeling of tight around my waist (which really isn’t a waist) and it’s never that cold here that my belly needs the extra layer.

I can’t swing the high-waisted tights – there’s something about a high waist band that drives me crazy. I’ve learned to embrace the low rise…just not too low 😉

We affectionately call those “Urkel pants” 🙂
If it makes you feel strong, more power to ya!!

I do pretty much all of those things with my running clothes, but it’s all completely unintentional, it just happens that way. I think some of my color combinations would violate some fashion police rules 🙂

Let’s just say it’s a good thing I workout at home, my kids are usually crazy embarassed about how I look. I don’t care, I’m sweating.

I don’t really have to do much to get eye rolls from my boys. Altho they do appreciate most of my taste in music. Funny post!

Since I run before daylight, I’m prone to just throw on anything that I can stand the smell of. I’ll even rock the wrong underwear with hideous panty lines. Unfortunately, nobody gets to enjoy my fashion sense.

hahahahaha. well duh we are obviously so high fashion! high waisted tights are good for tucking the gut and keeping it warm on winter runs. i have gotten a little better at ‘matching’ / coordinating (used to always make fun of those perfectly matched outfits people wear) but there are (many) days i just look like rainbow bright. i’m probably still not considered high fashion… but you clearly are! your kids are so lucky to have such a cool mom!

Haha, love this. I love the high waisted running tights, that much more to hold my flabby post baby skin 😉 But I can’t do the navy and black, just can’t.

Definitely would like the high waisted pants for cold runs and I live in black and navy, but no apparent bra for me, guess I’m not totally hip.

So funny! My kids often roll their eyes at what I wear on runs. Luckily they just expect it and don’t seem to be embarrassed by it;)
