Running Hacks

May 12, 2015

First, here’s how last week went. I swear tri training is kicking my behind:
Monday: 1 hr. Masters Swim
Tuesday: Group Cycle
Wednesday: Ran 5 miles w/tri group. Hill repeats mixed with mile repeats. Heaven help me.
Thursday: 22 miles bike
Friday: Rest
Saturday: Bike 10, Ran 6 miles
Sunday: Strength and swim

Ok now for some running hacks. I don’t have too many…that come to mind anyway.

Those of you that have raced with me have seen this:

baby formula

I use an old compartmented baby formula container to store my drink powder and apres-race supplements.

I always bring my iFitness belt to store my car keys, just in case there is no gear check. It’s no fun to be caught with no pockets and no gear check. Or to have your skirt pulled down by said car keys. No. fun.

race number belt

Race number belt. Basically I’m sick to death of safety pins. Half the time I’d rather not be sticking pins in my running clothes anyway. I’ve not had good luck with the magnet bib holder gizmos. I got my belt waaaaay cheap at Running Warehouse. It’s one of the best purchases ever.  I suppose if mine had a pouch, my car key issues would be solved too.

It looks like you are kicking tri training’s butt! Nice job getting it all in

I like that belt! I got some of the magnet bib holders around the holidays but I haven’t tried them yet. I am always trying to figure out ways to carry all my stuff when I race, and I try to avoid the gear check whenever possible!

I really like the baby formula container idea!

I don’t really have a car key…I’d guess you’d call if a key fob. It’s smooth and rectangular. Anyhoo, I can’t tell you how many times it’s ridden in my bra. I need something to fill that space! GU have been known to reside there as well. HA.

No running hacks that I can think of right now. Tri training is no joke, I am looking forward to really getting into our multiple 70.3 training. We have been slacking lately!

I’ve used race bels for a long time now, not a fan of safety pins.

I wish belts worked for me. Sadly my lower pudge always pours over them which is no bueno!! LOL

I love my iFitness zipper pouch for long runs. It can fit my phone and it has those elastic strings to attach the bib too:) So much better than having to pin them on my shirt! Especially when my hands are cold and stiff before a race;)

I added the bib holders to my spibelt and other race belts!

The baby formula container is brilliant! I have no idea where any of my number belts are anymore, but they could be great for running races–I like it!

Fun hacks! I like chews better than gels, but my belt only has “gel loops.” So I take my chews out of the pouch that is too thick to fit through the loops, and stack them one on top of the other in a ziplock. Then they fit in the gel loop. It’s not very attractive to have a ziplock back hanging from my waist, but it works!

The baby food container idea is so smart!! I use a Spi belt with number holder – the zipper pouch holds my phone, key and a GU. Life saver!

Very interesting to hear that the race bib magnets haven’t worked for you! I have been thinking for a long time about trying them out – so thanks for sharing your thoughts. I love your idea of using the compartmentalized container for drink mix, etc. So clever! I am with you on always being prepared with how to carry your car keys just in case gear check isn’t provided. I’ve seen some weird instances where it wasn’t!

I always use a race belt! I hate poking pins in my pretty shirts. AND I hate when the bib doesn’t align correctly. Drives me nuts on race day.
And I like the baby containers for protein. I put mine in ziploc.

I have been wanting one of those belts! I’ll have to check Running Warehouse.

Love the container idea for the powders and such!!! Running belts are a MUST and I forgot mine last race and it was the WORST! Ugh!

I’m with you on the safety pin thing. But I have yet to find an acceptable alternative!

You are kicking a** with your tri training, btw!

  18. Kelli says

    May 12, 2015 at 7:30 pm

Good job with the tri training! You’re doing pretty long runs with your bricks already! My coach usually has me do 20 minutes after a long ride. Sometimes up to 3 miles but usually not much longer than that.

  19. Coco says

    May 12, 2015 at 7:50 pm

So do you pin your race number to the belt? My next car needs to have keyless entry so I don’t have to deal with the giant key!

  20. Mary Beth Jackson says

    May 13, 2015 at 4:18 am

Wow lady! This training schedule is no joke! Impressive! I like my race dots, I just have to play with a bit as far as placement goes or if you stop or sit to potty the damn things all stick together and you come out with your shirt all jacked up! LOL! I figured it was user error so I am working on that! 🙂

Yes! The baby food containers are genius! Too bad I threw mine all out! I have been using Nuun tubes to hold snacks though!

I definitely need a race number belt! I hate safety pins because I am always sticking myself with them.

Those are some GENIUS running hacks! I use a runnign belt, but haven’t considered using a baby formula container! 🙂

  25. Lisa @ RunWiki says

    May 13, 2015 at 7:35 am

I get sick of the safety pin thing too– it’s nice to have a belt. The baby food jars for protein is a great idea! Recently I saw this Under Armor bracelet that you can store your key in– it was interesting looking.

  26. Patty @ Reach Your Peak says

    May 13, 2015 at 7:53 am

I love my flipbelt but I like that this has the clips for your bib. I also hate pinning my number to my shirt. I have now ruined 2 lululemon shirts because the pins rip holes in them!

My SPIbelt has been a lifesaver for carrying my phone, a gel and my car key.

I’ve been using the race magnets lately and I’m getting better at putting them on, but at first I’d end up with my skirt all screwed up as the magnets stuck to themselves LOL.
