Playlists That Move You

July 11, 2016

Do you pick a “theme song” that motivates you as you train toward a goal race? That’s what we’re talking about this week on the Tuesdays on the Run linkup.

Playlists

Personally I was not an early adopter on the running-with-music front. I was more of a purist. When the Caveman suggested I run with tunes, I initially turned up my nose. How would I tune into my breathing and the sounds of nature? Eventually I came around and trained with music, although I did not listen to music for any of my marathons until the Marine Corps Marathon in 2012, which was marathon #7.

As far as theme songs for a goal race, I don’t recall many. But this was definitely my theme song for NYCM in 2014.

This was the theme song for my first tri last year.

I went with yet another Flo Rida song as the theme for my tri this year. Not sure what this one had to do with anything. After the outcome at that tri, I don’t really care for this song anymore.

I haven’t chosen a theme song for this fall’s Indy Monumental Marathon yet.

But I’m kind of digging this song right now.

Alright- I just added Flo Rida. Thank you for that!

I am also a huge Flo Rida fan! I listen to a lot of music on my long runs but never on my bike and I have never listened in a race either – not even a marathon. It sounds weird but I like to be tuned into my race and hear the other runners and the crowd. Another funny thing is I can listen to super cheesy songs like “Fight Song” or “Confidence” on my runs and they feel empowering…but in the car they just seem silly 🙂

Allie I feel the same way about wanting to be tuned into my race and the crowds!

I never apologize for the questionable choices on my playlist! Nickelback? Seether? It’s all about the finish line.

I never had a theme song for a race although there are certain songs I hope to hear while I run ( I put my ipod on shuffle).

There are also songs that remind me of certain races!

I like the idea of having a theme song for a race, I’ve never tried that! I always love hearing Eminem’s Lose Yourself during a run, and anything with Missy Elliott!

I’ve never had a theme song, but music is a must. Some races make it easy to have a favorite, like NYC and Frank Sinatra. I’ve got random choices, but I’m entertained and no one else can hear it 🙂

Ooh I must check out that One Republic song! I love them!

I’m kind of the opposite — started with music, then ditched it a couple of years ago.

I was reading in RW how having some tunes for those last few miles can be really helpful. I may have to give that a try at some point!

I’ve had the same play list for ages, but sometimes add a tune here or there. Love One Republic, Flo-Rida, Linkin Park just to name a few.

For my first 10K my theme song was Fighter by Christina Aguilera. But I never had a theme song for other races… weird.

I love the variety on your playlist!

Good tunes, lady! I will forever run, bike (on trails, with one earbud in), and swim (sometimes) with tunes; gotta have the good stuff.:)

I like the idea of a theme song for each race. I’ll have to check out more Flo-Rida since he’s come up on lots of lists!

I’m partial to Ricky Martin, Marc Anthony, Pitbull, Daddy Yankee, 440, Juan Luis Guerra, Jennifer Lopez, Maná and a bunch of other Latin American artists. They make any run so much happier!

OMG I live under a rock. I totally didn’t know Flo Rida was responsible for My House. #ilistentothedeadortechno

I like My House and Counting Stars is one of my very fav running songs.
My favorite old stand by is old school – Dreamer by Livin’ Joy – that is my go to 🙂

I don’t pick one song, but Ido do a new playlist 3 or 4 times a year. There are a couple songs that I associate with races, but for the most part, I don’t listen to music anymore.. only for the end of a race if the going gets tough. David Guetta’s / Sia’s Titanium is my absolute favorite ever running song.

[…] Tuesdays on the Run link-up about running playlists. Thanks as always to Patty, Erika and Marcia for […]

marciashealthyslice I'm a working mom who, as part of a mid-life challenge, decided to run a marathon for kicks. I didn't plan on it becoming a hobby, but it did. I qualified for Boston at my second marathon and finished the 6 World Marathon Majors in London in 2019. Set no small goals. You never know what you're capable of until you try!
