Brrrrrrrr It’s Cold! What to Wear?

December 6, 2009

This morning when I got out for my12 miler it was 26 degrees. Not horrendously chilly, but windy enough to make this not-yet-acclimated-to-the-cold runner pause.

I opted for a snug fitting base layer made of technical fabric to wick sweat away from the skin. The last thing I want is something loose that allows icy air to blast up my torso.
Technical pants/tights with a bit of a flare at the bottom to cover my shoe a bit. I probably didn’t need these today but give me a small wimp allowance please as the cold season is young. Oh and pardon my bleary-eyed, just rolled out of the rack after the annual holiday party look.
Tech gloves and fleece hat complete with ponytail port–I could have gone with a headband–wimp allowance again please.
Sunglasses, not so much for sun as for minimizing eye watering from the wind/cold, and I topped it all off with a nylon running jacket. High-viz and reflective–it’s still hunting season afterall. Since the pavement was clear, I went with my regular long-run shoes.
I’ll be back with more cold-weather wardrobe tips as the mercury continues to plunge!

Melissa the hat is online from Sahalie. I have a headband like it too that's awesome. Wait for them to have a 25% off sale.

Lisa, I like the gloves just fine, although I've tried only one other pair so I may not be terribly discriminating…

I didn't even think of sunglasses as protection from wind, thanks for the tip, and for stopping by my blog!

My eyes often tear in the cold too. I need my contacts to get here so I can get rid of the glasses. Pain when running.

    Nice layers! Toasty warm.

That looks like the perfect outfit! I love how the tight wicking clothes keep you from getting a drift!

Looks like great cold weather gear. That is pretty much what I wear. Temps are a little colder here right now so I add a neck gaiter and I put armwarmers over my base layer and under my jacket. This way my torso doesn't overheat and I can take them off if needed. We are supposed to hit -10 degrees this weekend. I don't think I can tackle that! Way to get out there 🙂

Looks like you are ready for the cold weather! Looking forward to your tips because although I've run for years, this will be my first winter braving the cold.

Hi, first time visiting your blog. I don't do a lot of outdoor workouts, but I'm glad for the information. My first thought when I saw your picture was that even in layers she looks so cute and tiny!

marciashealthyslice I'm a working mom who, as part of a mid-life challenge, decided to run a marathon for kicks. I didn't plan on it becoming a hobby, but it did. I qualified for Boston at my second marathon and finished the 6 World Marathon Majors in London in 2019. Set no small goals. You never know what you're capable of until you try!
