Blue Moon

January 2, 2010

Did you see the blue moon last night/this morning? Our very rare second full moon in a month’s time? Although the blue has nothing to do with it’s color, around here it did cast an eerily pretty bluish glow on the snow. Although I’m no astrologer, I interpret this blue moon on the last day of last decade and the first day of the new decade to be a very good omen. And my first run of the new year reinforced my interpretation.

I woke to 4 degrees with -12 wind chill. Not exactly optimal conditions for my planned 10-miler. After playing Let’s Make a Deal with myself for way too long, I finally donned what seemed like every piece of winter running apparel known to man and got out there.
Minimum: 3 miles, goal: 4, stretch goal: 5 miles with the remainder inside on the mill.
Magically, just a 1/2 mile into the run I entered that elusive ‘zone’.
A brilliant sun danced, the snow sparkled. The wind was harsh but I couldn’t have cared less.
The miles slipped away. Effortless. I brought no water because I didn’t plan on being out long. Plus it would  have frozen solid pretty quick. Should I turn back? Am I too frozen to realize I am frozen? Don’t question just run.
Miles 5, 6, 7, 8 still in that euphoric, peaceful place.
Mile 9:  feeling extraordinary still, I threw in some hill repeats then headed for home.
Today, for reasons unknown, the run transcended all obstacles put before me. No wind was too strong or too cold, no ice too slick to stop me. 10 miles, negative splits and all, outside on New Years Day. What a gift. And what a good omen for the new year.
At times like these, when I easily could have looked at the thermometer and instantly ruled out an outdoor run of any kind, I am so grateful that I took the chance and tried. When we open our  hearts and minds and consider the infinite possibilities, we transform ourselves from the inside out. We are all capable of so much more than we often ever dare to ponder. It is my wish for all of us as we go forward into a new decade that we realize our passions, running and otherwise, and strive to live up to our limitless, divine potential.
Happy New Year!

What a great run and great start to the new decade. Wish all our runs could be so nice, but then we wouldn't appreciate them as much.

Great way to start the year!

marciashealthyslice I'm a working mom who, as part of a mid-life challenge, decided to run a marathon for kicks. I didn't plan on it becoming a hobby, but it did. I qualified for Boston at my second marathon and finished the 6 World Marathon Majors in London in 2019. Set no small goals. You never know what you're capable of until you try!
