What I Did On My Rest Day

January 31, 2010

1. Slept 9 hours!

2. Made my usual weekend jaunt to Trader Joe’s where I came upon a yummy new snack I am sure to overeat with abandon: They’re almonds, covered in dark chocolate, covered in cocoa. Nice!

2. Visited a new bakery in town in search of a festive hostess gift for tonight’s Mardi Gras party. The place was very French, high end, and wonderful but nary any of Plan A:  Beignets in sight. So, not to offend Monsieur Baker and walk out empty handed, I bought: 2 carmel cupcakes, (Things 1 and 2), a decadent, brownie-like but plus delicieux  chocolate confection called a  ‘cocobelle’ and a pecan shortbread-like dandy called a “dixiebelle”. $20 and lots of drool later I was out the door and over to the candy store in search of Plan B: Pralines. Alas nary a praline at the confectionary. Hello? Is Mardi Gras not just around the corner?

3. After lounging around, indulging in bakery products in the name of carbing for tomorrow’s long run, pondering what to bring to the quickly approaching party, the big lightbulb moment finally arrived:  Plan C: I WILL MAKE BEIGNETS MYSELF!!!

4. After considerable dough rolling, frying and sugaring, voila! We have BEIGNETS!

5.  To the Mardi Gras party we went! It was festive and fun with plenty of shrimp creole, red beans and rice, King’s cake, Hurricanes and more. As I’m sure you can tell from Thing 1’s face. A good time was had by all. Maybe a little too good.

There you have it: no yoga, no messing with kettle bells, no run of any sort. It felt a little weird but as ‘they’ say, rest days are just as important, if not more so, than workout days.

Totally agree with you there on rest days, though they are hard. The guilt factor is always there.

Sounds like an awesome day! If you want a kick butt King Cake that is praline flavored (trust me…it's awesome) google Ambrosia's bakery in Baton Rouge and have one shipped. YUM!

Way to rock out plan C! I'd be scrambling all over town not even thinking of making anything myself. Glad you got tons of sleep and ready to tackle the week ahead!

    Your Beignets look awesome!

I have a really hard time taking rest days. I am happy you did! I need to do that more often! (Although, my yoga is so gentle, it could probably be counted as rest!)

Oh yes Mardi Gras will be here any minute. We already went to our first parade. We're sooo excited. I've been reminding my girls of the "rules" for Mardi gras.

marciashealthyslice I'm a working mom who, as part of a mid-life challenge, decided to run a marathon for kicks. I didn't plan on it becoming a hobby, but it did. I qualified for Boston at my second marathon and finished the 6 World Marathon Majors in London in 2019. Set no small goals. You never know what you're capable of until you try!
