Recipe for a Rockin’ Race Calendar

November 22, 2011

Tis the season for a flurry of race-planning activity.
Some have their 2012 calendars already bursting with commitments, others are still in the pondering stage and then there are those seat-of-the-pants peeps who sign up on race day.

I’ve been slowly peppering my 2012 calendar with races lately.

My recipe goes like this:
1. Start with one, maybe 2 BHAGS (big, hairy audacious goal races).
For me that’s a marathon I am passionate about. A bucket lister like London or NYC or Marine Corps.
So far I’m up in the air on this. My dual-DNS fall this year may have left me a tad gun shy.

2. Spice it up with a handful, maybe more 1/2 marathons.
They’re great tune-up races. Not too long, not too short. Juuuuust right.
January: Carlsbad Half
March: March Madness Half
July: RnR Chicago
September: Denver RnR
I suspect there will be more.

3. Work in as many destination races* as possible before the Caveman grunts. All the better if these are done with friends!
January: Carslbad Half
April: Possssibly a fierce little something, to be named later.
September: RnR Denver Half
November: We’ll be in NC** for Thanksgiving in 2012 visiting Hurricane MIL. In order to restrain myself from committing Hari Kari, I’ll do the Gallop n Gorge 8k.

*Three destination race is a little rich for my blood. But let the record show: this year I did zero. ZIP, Zilch. Diddly squat.
** The NC trip is not a destination but rather an obligation. That race is strictly self-preservation. In fact I think my health insurance should cover it.

4. Add depth to the brew by folding in a relay.
June: 2012 is the year I FINALLY do the Ragnar Madison to Chicago!
There are still 2 spots remaining on our team. Anyone wanna join us?

5. Sprinkle in some 5k and 10k to taste
TBD

6. Get out of the comfort zone already–Duathlon!
I’ve been wanting to do one for two years now and still haven’t pulled the trigger.
2012 will be the year! It will. It really will. Pinky swear.

How do you build your racing schedule?

marciashealthyslice I'm a working mom who, as part of a mid-life challenge, decided to run a marathon for kicks. I didn't plan on it becoming a hobby, but it did. I qualified for Boston at my second marathon and finished the 6 World Marathon Majors in London in 2019. Set no small goals. You never know what you're capable of until you try!
