What I Ate/Weigh-In Wednesday

February 29, 2012

Its time to yank the dietary choke chain once again. Last time I checked in I was hovering about 5 lbs. over the weight at which I qualified for Boston. Will I hold that number as my standard for physical performance and measure myself against it forever? Crazy maybe but I think yes.

Since I last participated in WIAW, there’s been a seismic shift. My body decided to play hardball and ballooned up 4 extra, unwelcome pounds, putting me a full 9 pounds over BQ weight. Yes, I’ve been hitting the weights hard. But lets face it, weights are not to blame here. Oddly my eating hasn’t been terrible. Sure there’s been a Thin Mint or 3 here and there but nothing worthy of 4 pounds of weight gain. Therein lies the mystery.
The suspects:

  • Advancing age: the impending M word may have something to do with it and my body is just less forgiving than it once was.
  • Lack of speed work/intense-enough workouts: my metabolism just isn’t running as hot as it once was.

I am nothing if not a fighter. If my body is going to launch a mutiny, I am fully capable of counter attack.

Over the past week I cleaned up my diet considerably:

  • Gone are the Girl Scout cookies
  • The handful of chips here and there
  • The crusts of leftover kid grilled cheese.
  • In came the violin-case sized containers of fresh produce.

You get the idea.
Other than a small transgression with the uber-large bag of Ghirardhelli bittersweet chips that resides in my freezer, they were on closeout at Costco so yes, in a time of weakness I dragged yet another bag home, I was pretty darn good.

Here is yesterday’s fare:

Some things never change: 1/2 of a PB Think Thin Bar w/black coffee and lots of water.

I had these with some Greek yogurt that I neglected to photograph.

Apres-run recovery shake: coconut milk, protein powder, chia seeds,
frozen mixed berries, spinach, splash of oj.

Snacks. I am loving the yellow lentil hummus you see there. It is so darn spicy, I cannot overeat it. Plus it comes topped with chopped sunflower seeds and apricots. Love! Um yes, that darn egg was so hard to peel.

Dinner was chicken fajitas on a bed of spinach instead of a tortilla, and an orange.

I topped off the night with a bottle of Kombucha. It’s a love/hate thing.
I’m definitely in the love camp on this one.

Since last week I am down 3 lbs. Take that middle-age spread!

Happy Leap Day!
How will you make the most of it?
Have you tried Kombucha?

marciashealthyslice I'm a working mom who, as part of a mid-life challenge, decided to run a marathon for kicks. I didn't plan on it becoming a hobby, but it did. I qualified for Boston at my second marathon and finished the 6 World Marathon Majors in London in 2019. Set no small goals. You never know what you're capable of until you try!
