Success, Spirulina and a Winner

June 1, 2012

I’ve been burning the candle from both ends for weeks, prepping for this weekend’s ice shows. I was ok with it when it was limited to after school and evenings but now that the rehearsals are impinging on sacred early morning workout time, it has been a challenge. Needing to to be on the ice at 5 am leaves precious little time to fit a run in.

I learn so much from the kids and parents though. I see mental toughness developing every day. I am amazed by the progress hard work brings. I also see toxic, self-defeating behavior and do my best to nip that in the bud.

Some of the ‘golden rules’ I’ve observed can be applied to many areas of life, including running:

  • If you want to get better you need to practice more. You get out what you put in. This requires some sacrifice.
  • With sacrifice comes mental toughness. How badly do you want it?
  • Improvement will come in the areas you focus on. Practice what you do not enjoy, you’ll get better at it. Lo and behold, it will no longer suck.
  • Other activities will enhance your efforts. Crosstrain, crosstrain, crosstrain.
  • Muscles are your BFF.
  • Focus on YOU. You have strengths and talents that are unique to YOU. What others are doing does not make you more or less.
  •  Positive attitude and mental toughness trump talent. Every. Time.

As a FitFluential Ambassador, I had the opportunity to test out some products that I am especially pumped about: Hawaiian Spirulina Pacifica and  BioAstin Astaxanthin. As a distance runner, I am always looking for ways to counteract the effects of oxidative stress and free radical damage brought on by hard, extended workouts.

Facts about Spirulina:

Spirulina is microscopic blue green vegetable microalgae that grow naturally in fresh water ponds and lakes in warm, sunny environments. Spirulina has been used as a food source for centuries.  It is considered the most complete naturally cultivated nutrient in the world, and Hawaiian Spirulina has approximately double the levels of key nutrients compared to other brands.

  • Approx. 60% complete digestible protein – it contains every essential amino acid
  • Contains more carotenoids than any other whole food and an excellent source of Vitamins A, K, B12 and Iron, Manganese and Chromium
  • Best wholefood source of gamma linoleic acid (GLA) – an essential fatty acid, necessary for human health. It plays a crucial role in brain function as well as normal growth and development.
  • Rich in vitamins, minerals, trace elements, chlorophyll and enzymes

Facts about BioAstin:

BioAstin Hawaiian Astaxanthin is a red carotenoid and has powerful antioxidant benefits and has been clinically validated in human studies as a safe and natural.

BioAstin supports:

  • Eye and brain health
  • Joint and tendon health
  • Cardiovascular health
  • Skin health

I just started taking these supplements so I look forward to sharing my full review with you in the next few weeks.

Please join me and the experts at Nutrex Hawaii in a Twitter Chat about super nutrients on Monday, June 4 at 8pm CST. Follow the hashtag #SuperNutrients.

Love the “Golden Rules”! I use a plant based protein powder with Spirulina in it every morning. I remember watching a show on blue green algae years ago and thinking “wow, I should try that”. Interesting:)

Good luck to all the skaters!!! Congrats to the winner.

I love me some cross training. I see a lot of people not liking it so maybe I am just weird 🙂

Great rules! It’s tough to practice your weaknesses when it’s so much more fun to practice your strengths.

Love that you coach kids – what a wonderful thing! And that’s a great list of lessons – sometimes tough to learn, but golden when you do.

We used spirulina when I was juice fasting with my sister last summer. Does it have protein? It seems like that is why we used it.

Love the golden rules!! I feel that so many runners need to observe the focus on you rule, me included at times. My husband’s mom gets so competitive with us that it gets annoying at times. He is faster than her and I am going to be soon, but she shouldn’t be upset with how she is doing! I want to tell her to run her own race and not worry about us, but that might cause problems.
