Adjusting to Change: A Progress Report

August 28, 2012

The other day I was lamenting about how school schedules, change of seasons, the infamous hip injury etc. shook my little corner of the world a little bit, tossing me out of my beloved routine.

I’ve got some progress to report: some good, some not so much:

1. I completed a 6-mile run this morning. It was hot. I think any heat tolerance (minimal) I may have built up has vanished with the pool running. My legs were leaden and devoid of even one iota of energy. BUT my hip was completely happy and pain free. Even a slow, suckfest run is better than an injured one or none at all. Color me grateful.

2. I got a call from Thing 2’s school yesterday telling me she was across town AT THE WRONG SCHOOL because I’d put her on the wrong bus in the morning. I’d like to thank the Academy for the auspicious Lifetime Achievement Award for Worst Mommy EVER. Sigh. Attentive much?

Which brings me to 3. Slowly, carefully, crawling and scratching my way back from injury + the school bus fiasco = I need to settle down, breathe and do some things differently.

The solution? Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the Yoga Den. I may not have enough time to complete a full workout in the wee hours like I used to, but I do have time to sit, reflect, and stretch.  I dragged an old Pilates mat out onto our deck. We just had all the boards replaced so it’s nice and fresh and begging us to spend more time on it. I do some morning reflection out here. I also stretch pre- and post run. I do the hip strengthening homework Dr. Miracle assigned and I’m also dabbling in yoga again. If you recall, last fall I ruptured my hamstring in a yoga class and had only been back a handful of times since. I feel like this most recent injury is a cry for more yoga in my life.

Right now, my deck-turned-yoga den is nothing special and very special all at once. No wind chimes, gongs or incense. Instead, I enjoy fresh air, gentle breezes and the peaceful sounds of nature.

Look at the stunning view from my mat in Corpse Pose!

My time out here is fleeting. We’ll be freezing again all too soon. But for now, I think it’s just what I need.

Do you have a special retreat?

I had stopped doing yoga because I didn’t have energy for a full class, but I realized just doing a few poses every day does make me feel great so I’m back to that now.

    Congrats on the recovery!

Looks wonderful out there. I didn’t realize your daughter ended up at the wrong school. Is she talking to you? Glad to hear of the pain free run and it has to cool down soon.

dont beat yourself up!! im a full time nanny, and on the first day of kindergarten last year for my oldest, we stuck her on the wrong bus. she ended up at a private school three miles down the road! it can happen to anyone! there are three schools at pick kids up at her bus stop, so you had to be SO super careful! you’re definitely not a terrible mommy!! :o) spa love!

Your deck looks like a lovely spot for thinking or exercise. And even better to be able to spend time there with the kids at school – and it doesn’t matter if it’s the right school or not as long as they’re out of the house.

I think your yoga den looks awesome! I love outdoors spaces.

So happy your hip cooperated for the run, even though it was blazing hot!

So who fixed the problem of the wrong school? I hope your daughter wasn’t too affected.

Love your yoga den, it sounds like it was a perfect day to pull that out.

I have to ask, did she make it to school on time? My daughter would have flipped out! Glad you just used it to make some healthy changes for you. AM yoga is a great way to start the day.

I don’t want to forget to add a YIPEEE for the pain free run. That is great news.

I’m grateful that my town is only 3miles long and we don’t have school buses – God knows where my kids would have wound up! I’ve been working through an injury this past year and it is wonderful when you have that first run without horrible discomfort and pain. Congrads! Love the deck.
