Yoga For Runners and Injury Update

September 10, 2012

It was a fabulous, fallish weekend here in the Chi-town boonies with excellent running and racing weather. It’s amazing the difference 20+ degrees makes. I felt like a new woman. My cranky hip cooperated for a 13.25 mile run. That was a huge confidence builder for the RnR Denver on 9/22. As far as marathon training goes, I’m so far off my plan, I’m kind of winging it here. Hip willing, it will all work out.

Cool temps are great for running but wow it was chilly in the yoga den! That didn’t stop us from having some fun in honor of National Yoga Month though.ย I’d planned to show you some yoga for runners but I was upstaged…in a big way….by the kiddos.

I mean, who can’t whip out a Pose of the Dancer in jeans? Ok me.

If I could hold crow for more than half a breath I suppose I’d be showing off too.

No worries though. My videographers stopped posing long enough to shoot some footage. Here are my favorite yoga poses for runners: especially ones with tight hamstrings and cranky, inflexible hips like mine.

Don’t miss out on the yoga month giveaway fun (hello $200 Athleta gift card and Satya jewelry). Special thanks to Athleta for sponsoring!

Pretty Muddy 5k is this Saturday! Here’s your last chance to join me as I make my maiden voyage in the mud. Use code HealthySliceDisc to save $10.

Any last bits of advice for mud run survival?

Love that you do yoga outside! Pigeon and I do not get along. In fact, all of the hip openers do me in. I’ve gotten to the point where I have decided that they actually hurt me rather than do any good. But I do love a good down dog!

Great vlog! I use downward dog a lot, and should probably incorporate more yoga hip stretches. Your videographer did a great job!

I was so impressed with that first pose when I thought it was you! lol Still impressed but feeling less bad about myself that it’s one of the Things–all young and flexible like that.

SQUEE to you too!!! Really looking forward to meeting you. So, the unofficial plan is that my running group is setting up a cheer tent at R&R – probably around mile 17 but I haven’t finalized it yet (guess who is in charge of it – oh, me – guess I better drive the route and figure it out). So if you have any gear, fuel, shooters, whatever you think you would need to keep trucking I’ll keep them handy.

Glad to hear that the training is going well. I think yoga is a good thing for runners and I actually tried some of the poses that you shared from Athleta. Wishing you lots of luck on your training and your upcoming race!

We’re going to have to find a spot to meet after Denver RnR and you’re going to have to wait for me for about an hour. Seriously, I can’t run 13.5 miles. Glad the hip cooperated!!

So I’m part of this campaign and got an e-mail saying the the sponsor liked your post. I came over to read and was excited to see you are doing the RnR in Denver too! I’m from Utah but am flying down with my brother for the marathon. It’s only my second marathon so naturally I’m nervous, but so excited. Best of luck to you, and those yoga poses are amazing!
