WIAW: Grain Brain Edition

October 30, 2013

I dove into the Grain Brain Challenge on Sunday with the prescribed 24-hr. fast. Just plenty of water for me. Here’s how the first day of Grain Brain eats went:
chili
Because my fast started and ended midday, my first official meal was lunch: Homemade 3-bean turkey chili leftover from our Halloween party.

Mid afternoon was tough. Coming off the fast, I was definitely hungry. Our party pumpkin pie taunted me from the fridge.

But saner heads prevailed and I went with a green protein smoothie instead.

  • Unsweetened coconut milk
  • Complete Truth Protein Powder
  • Avocado
  • Kale
  • Green Apple
  • Ice

Complete Truth protein powder is new to me. I received a sample for review and I have to say I like it. It’s raw, vegan, soy-free, dairy-free, gluten-free and non-GMO. Just 4 ingredients in this one: Quinoa, maca, hemp seeds and Stevia. It has a natural, earthy flavor that went well with the fruit. Best of all it held me until dinner.

chicken
Dinner was baked chicken breast that I coated in Greek yogurt and grated parmesan, mixed with turmeric and Italian seasoning. This was the first time I added turmeric to this dish. It was delicious. I’ve been roasting a ton of squash from our garden lately. Just olive oil, salt and pepper lets the natural sweetness shine through. There was also a side dish of sauteed dino kale with garlic that did not get photographed. My bad.

There you have it: a very ‘clean’ day by my standards.

Do you enjoy kale? Do you have a spooky meal planned for Halloween?

I absolutely love kale, I don’t get to eat it as much as I like as my other half is not a fan. I think it has to be perfectly cooked though, over or under is not cool!

I totally get this Claire! I am the only kale fan in this house.

Looks yummy! I am so envious of the fact that you are able to harvest so much food from your own garden. It doesn’t get more local than that!

I am getting more and more into kale these days. Kale chips are so popular these days and I’ve had fun making my own at home. However – I saw a recipe someone posted the other day for chocolate kale chips. Not so sure about that combination…

Chocolate? As in chocolate dipped? I can’t even imagine!

I still haven’t mastered kale yet – I should try again but the first attempt was pretty much a fail!
Is the 24 hour fast just to try and help clear out the toxins? I’m pretty sure my family would hate me if I tried to fast – I used to b OK about not eating now the point at which I go to long I get shaky and sick feeling (old age?).

I happen to be eating chicken soup w/ kale in it as we speak, and had kale in my smoothie this morning, so I think the answer is yes. I love the sound of that chicken you made.

Now–did you workout on the day you fasted? I think I would pass out if i did that!

MZ I did workout. It was a very easy run, more prancersize than anything else. It was tough though!

Honestly, I’ve never tried kale. I think we’re just a little behind the food fads over here.

    I like kale if seasoned or made a way I like… 🙂

I am no way going to do that grain brain thing! 😉

    That protein powder sounds awesome!

I need you to come over and make that baked chicken dinner. Yum!

I’ve been wanting to try coconut milk for awhile…but after a bad experience with Capt. Morgan’s rum, I’m wary of any coconut flavored liquids!

Neat blog! Is your theme custom made or did you download it from somewhere?
A theme like yours with a few simple adjustements would really make my blog stand out.
Please let me know where you got your theme. Kudos

Hmm it appears like your website ate my first comment (it was extremely long) so
I guess I’ll just sum it up what I wrote and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog.
I too am an aspiring blog blogger but I’m still new to the whole thing.

Do you have any helpful hints for rookie blog
    writers? I’d definitely appreciate it.

Unquestionably believe that which you said.

Your favorite reason appeared to be on the net the simplest thing to be aware of.
I say to you, I definitely get annoyed while people consider worries that they plainly don’t
know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top as well
as defined out the whole thing without having side effect ,
people can take a signal. Will probably be back to get more.

    Thanks

in penning this site. I am hoping to view the same high-grade
content by you in the future as well. In fact, your creative writing abilities has encouraged me to get my own blog now 😉
