Pi Day Friday Finds

March 14, 2014

I can’t let March slip by without sharing someย of the things I’ve been enjoying lately. Sadly, I am not enjoying any pie, although there’s a little Pi Day lightning round giveaway going on here.

bereal

Be Real Shoes. These environmentally friendly barefoot shoes are made right here in the U.S. of A. The super thin “Dermi-Sole provides superior traction while simulating the barefoot experience. Since wearing Newtons is as minimalist as I go, I’ve mostly worn these in the gym and for plyo intervals so far. While visually they remind me of gorilla feet, I have to say they are quite comfortable and respond well to quick agility moves. They’re recommended for trails, pavement and slippery surfaces and the sole is 100% recyclable. If you’re a minimalist or barefoot runner, these are worth checking out!

zym

Zym Electrolyte Drink Tablets. With warmer temps and peak training season just around the corner, Zym is something I plan to keep in my hydration arsenal. These tablets are designed to replenish the vitamins and minerals your body uses during intense workouts. Just drop a tablet in water and give it a minute to dissolve. Zym restores electrolytes, reduces muscle fatigue, cramps and lactic acid so you can perform your best. I used Zym for a few of my long runs. I think I enjoyed orange the most but they were all good. Most importantly, the runs all felt strong.

diet

Diet Failure…The Naked Truth. I mentioned this book awhile back. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t find the cover a bit off-putting, since I like to focus more on what my body does and how I feel rather than how it looks, but perhaps I am in the minority. I appreciate the play on the word ‘naked’ nonetheless. I’m glad I did not judge this book by it’s cover because it contains a ton of good information. If you want a detailed understanding on the role insulin plays in fat storage and weight gain, this is for you. The author is a personal trainer and nutritionist who has lived what she writes about. This is not a book to be raced through, but rather one you pick up again and again and absorb the information in small bites. Gilman includes compelling discussions about the effects of sugar and alcohol, sheds light on the origins of cravings and depression and so much more. You won’t find a specific diet or exercise plan, but Gilman does share food recommendations as well as mental, emotional and spiritual health tips. This book was more than I expected. A worthwhile read!

Are you enjoying anything special lately? How will you celebrate Pi Day?

I hate to say it, but those types of barefoot shoes are just plain unattractive to me.

My reading list is getting loooong, but I want to add this one on, too. Thanks for the recommendation.

I let Pi day sneak up on me this year. On the way to school this morning Hunter asked if we were doing anything – umm…like making a pie??? Maybe when he gets home this afternoon!

Not many things being fully made in the USA anymore so its always nice to hear about things they are. I’m gonna have to look into the shoes.

My poor feet can’t handle shoes like that but I always wanted to try them! I di agree with you on book covers like that but I guess it is about selling the book… ๐Ÿ˜‰

Do you like Zym better than Nuun? Hammer has a similar product too. Hard to choose one!

The picture on that book reminds me of a book my Mum used to have back in the 70s – I think it’s the poses and the length of the man’s shorts. Made me a little nostalgic there for a moment.

I don’t mind the emphasis on the body but for some reason that cover looks totally 80s to me. There is just something about the poses.

I didn’t see the gorilla feet thing until I scrolled up again, I get it.

Don’t care much for sports drinks, drops, pops, or pills that’s why I’ve been declining all of those offers. However, if you like them and they work then awesome!

Is it snowing at your house? It is here. Annoying.

I totally forgot about Pi Day. Dang it! When I was a classroom teacher I would tie it in.

If I’d run barefoot I would be permanently injured. Glad you can wear those shoes. You are right, it’s time to enforce our hydration arsenal.

I enjoyed some pie on Pi Day! I can’t do barefoot shoes, 4mm drop seems like the most minimalist that I can do.

marciashealthyslice I'm a working mom who, as part of a mid-life challenge, decided to run a marathon for kicks. I didn't plan on it becoming a hobby, but it did. I qualified for Boston at my second marathon and finished the 6 World Marathon Majors in London in 2019. Set no small goals. You never know what you're capable of until you try!
