Eggshell Shuffle Race Report

April 20, 2014

On Saturday morning, we ran the Eggshell Shuffle. This year Thing 1 agreed to run and recruited a friend to join her as well. The weather was pretty much perfection minus a little wind.
Like I mentioned in my last post, I took the Yoplait Greek 100 Taste-Off to the race for more taste testing. Runners love yogurt, right?
taste-off collage
Turns out runners (and spectators) overwhelmingly chose Yoplait over Chobani as well. Check here for info on how you can take the taste off for yourself. Special thanks to Yoplait for sponsoring this taste-off.

So back to the race. The half marathoners went off, leaving us 5k’ers next. Here’s how it went:
Mile 1: I’m off like a bat out of hell as usual.
A woman pulls up along side of me, then gets out ahead. Who does she think she is anyway?
I do my thang. The first 2 miles are out and back: the first mile net downhill, a little climbing in the second. I remind myself to save something for the uphill. I hit the turnaround at 8:08, I’ll take it.

Mile 2: I look for Thing 1 & co. as I head back. Surprisingly they’re not far behind as they’d planned to jack around and walk but that’s obviously not happening as they’re scowling, deep in concentration. We’re hard into the wind now and the lady who pulled ahead of me is along side again. But on the hills she creeps ahead.
My mouth is so dry. Like dry socket dry. Whatever a dry socket is. Why am I thinking about dry sockets?
Gosh I’d love a drink.
Are my capris sliding down? I think they are.
I yank them up, just in case.
I cheerlead in my head. These are not hills don’t you dare walk.
Come on you have endurance. It’s a friggin 5k.
I feel like I’m going backwards I feel so darn slow crawling up the incline in the wind.

Mile 3: I wave at Caveman and Thing 2 as we cut across the grass onto a bike path.
mile3
I’m running alongside a bright yellow shirt guy to the extent the Caveman thought I knew him, with the lady about 10 ft. ahead.
Not sure how, but I dusted bright yellow shirt guy and the lady shortly after the water station (I didn’t stop in case you were wondering) and was on my own. Nobody to draft off of. One more out and back. The lady is a good 30 seconds back now. No sign of yellow shirt. I don’t even think to look for Thing 1. Nice mom.
finish
I trudged on and brought it in for the finish. I definitely gave it all I had and discovered that if I hold my breath the urge to puke subsides.

Finish time: 27:10
AG: 3/35
Final Words: Blah. Almost 30 seconds slower than last year even though I feel like I gave it all I had. The shorts are cute but this year they’re Asics and the M I got are way too big. There was also a tech shirt option. The medal is super cute. After race food was excellent and plentiful: bagels, fruit, bars, m&m’s pretzels. Parking was tough. Tougher than last year. We didn’t stay for the egghunt but overall a fun, well-done race. Just need to find my speed.

It’s always great to see Erica, who spanked the half marathon as usual.

A special shoutout for everyone running Boston! What was fun for you this weekend? Did you hunt for eggs? Did you enter my giveaway?

WONDERFUL performance, and your thoughts gave me a giggle. <3

No egg hunt in this house. We get Sophia next weekend, so maybe we'll let her know that the Easter Bunny left some for her in the park nearby. 😉

Nice job on the AG Place!! Frustrating to push hard and not perform as well as you’d like to, but hey, placing is placing, right?

I took a trip to the zoo with my youngest, did a long MTB ride, celebrated Easter with my in-laws, and tomorrow (my last day of spring break, kiddo back in school) have a looooong bike ride planned. We’ll see what the actual mileage ends up being, since I’m still moving very carefully and licking my wounds from Saturday’s crashes.

Great job on the age group place! I haven’t done a 5k in years. I don’t know if I could kick into gear like that for such a short distance. I bet it was fun to do with your kids too!

The egg medal is really cute – I don’t think I’ve ever seen a medal for a 5k here, unless it’s an ag win thing.

Looks like a chilly day out there….but the grass is green so it must be starting to warm up. I sure hope so – for your sanity!

I wonder what I could run a 5k in right now, considering I haven’t done one spec of speedwork since like October. Eh…this age thing sucks big time. It’s early in the year, you’ll get your speedy legs back!

Hope you had a happy Easter, my dear friend!

Great job on the race! I’m just getting into 5ks – bypassed them completely when I started running to the longer races. They are definitely gut busting puke worthy races!

Always great to see you! Thanks for indulging me and taking the pic with the Easter bunny. Your kids think I am nuts. But wait… there were pretzel m & ms?? My stomach was a mess. I took water and Muscle Milk for the husband only. I do dig the water bottle this year!
