Getting Stuff Done

April 14, 2014

I’m linking up with Amanda’s Best Foot initiative and sharing a peek at my workouts last week: Where I strayed from the plan, stuff in blue is what I actually did.
Total miles: 20.
Monday: Rest
Tuesday: 6x400m. 4x400m. Oh these were hard on my race-weary legs.
Wednesday: Pace ladder; strength training. Ragged fartleks; strength training.
Thursday: Bike 15 miles. Yoga.
Friday: 30 minutes easy running. Drills.
Saturday: 8 miles, including 3×15 mins. @ HMP. Craptastic and slow. But I got it in before the hail storm. That is all.
Sunday: 40 minutes easy running. Strength.
Everyday: Pushups and corework.

With my first half marathon of the year on the books, it’s time to look ahead to the Flying Pig 3-way (5k, 10k, half). Because I was so pleased with the Coaching Plan I used for Lincoln, I decided to continue with a 4-week plan to bridge me over to Flying Pig weekend. This first week was no picnic. I blame residual race fatigue. Oh and the highlight of the week? I finally got out on my bike!
hail

We were treated to some spring/summer!-like weather before Mom Nature exacted her price and gave us a wicked hail storm, followed by heavy downpours and a 40-degree and counting drop in temps. Snow on tap today. Why do I live here again??

Productivity

Getting Stuff Done: It happens about this time every year and I know I’m not alone. Ice shows, track season, parties, graduations, end of school stuff all seem to collide into a tangled mass. To make matters worse, since Einstein’s my middle name, I booked a destination race weekend (Flying Pig) smack dab in the middle of the chaos. Turns out that weekend is Thing 1’s conference track meet so she cannot travel with us and run the kid’s marathon I signed her up for. Nor will I be there to see her compete. Cue the violins. Color me guilty. While I did not overcommit to volunteer at school this year, I still feel overwhelmed and on the verge of dropping the ball somewhere. Here are some things I’m doing to try to keep my head above water:

  • Make a daily to-do list.
  • Do things at your earliest convenience.
  • Shuffle the workout schedule if you need to, but better yet, knock it out first thing.
  • Set reminder alarms.
  • Keep a master calendar.
  • Delegate–I’m not good at this. Guilty as charged.
  • Stay on task. I’m not good at this either. I’m looking at you Facebook. Literally.
  • Just say no. The world won’t end.

Does this time of year take a toll on you? How do you stay focused and organized? Are you procrastinator?

I was JUST saying this yesterday to my husband!! I’m not always a procrastinator, but it seems more and more like things get left to the last minute because there is always something going on. Track season totally takes a toll on me. Add in my ultra training schedule and I constantly feel like I’m juggling just a liiiiiiiittle too fast and the balls are about to drop! O_o

I am a procrastinator with some things… but mostly I just put too much on my plate. I need to say NO!

So yesterday the NY Times had this great article on how parental involvement is overrated. Here’s the link: http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/04/12/parental-involvement-is-overrated/?_php=true&_type=blogs&_r=0

So you can let yourself off the hook and enjoy your hat trick!

Sometimes I get overwhelmed with my list, but I just keeping checking things off one at a time… and at the same time taking moments to just slow down and just be.

Oh you are so preaching to the choir! A master calendar and to do list help to keep me on track. I’m not good at delegating either – working on it!

I heard something about that “s” word here for later in the week, too. Ugh.

I hear you on the guilt and the shuffling and overbooking. The weekend of my 50 (Mother’s Day of course) I way over booked – I think I have everything except the boys worked out.
And our weather is similar to yours – 80+ Saturday and 35 with snow flurries today – nice!

I am a bit of a procrastinator, I always seem to find other stuff to do in order to postpone things.

I am definitely a procrastinator, but I’ve hit the point in this pregnancy where nesting is kicking in. I’m getting ALL THE THINGS done and then sleeping like a rock (an uncomfortable rock) at night.

I love the just say no tip:) If you do it often enough, people will stop asking and you are free to do what you are really passionate about! I also make to-do lists and find them very helpful. I am also a extreme procrastinator even though people seem to think I am really organized. Oh how little they know;)

Sometimes I procrastinate and other times not – it depends on the urgency of my duties. At the moment with work continuing to be a little insane, there’s no procrastinating whatsoever. When work’s quiet it can take me two hours to cut out a bikini.

running miles at my goal pace has so become one of my favorite workouts!!

I tend to go through phases with feeling insanely overwhelmed and then yup, listing it all out and just remembering it can’t all be done so one thing at a time!

Sounds like you had a great week of training. I am notorious for over booking and over extending myself, so I have no great words of wisdom in that department

    Marcia-
I love being a gold member, When you earn your free coffee, it’s the best!
Wish I was in productive mode, haven’t gotten there (yet)!
Can’t wait to hear about the Flying Pig! Enjoy! It’s a great race.
