What’s Up With That?

April 30, 2015

I just finished up 3 days of the most intense workouts of my life. FTP (functional threshold power) testing measures the maximum power one can sustain for one hour. Training zones are calculated from it. Day 1 I was tested on the bike, Day 2 was run, Day 3 was swim. All 3 days were heinous to say the least. The run went as expected. The swim? It is what it is. But the bike? According to the test I’ve got some mad skillz. Who knew? I don’t even ride regularly and when I do I jack around.

As a result of 3 very intense days, I’ve got a huge metabolic burn going on. I am a fuel-seeking missile.

polar strap

Who knew a Polar heart rate monitor could go in the water? Not I. I swam with my watch today too. As long as you don’t press any buttons under water, you’re good.

When I make the left turn out of the school parking lot after morning dropoff, onto a busy, rush hour road crawling with bumper-to-bumper traffic, the drivers are usually very nice about taking turns and letting us merge. But what about that one driver who pretends not to see you and rushes ahead, not letting you in? You know who I’m talking about. What’s up with that? Karma baby.

flying pig

This time last year I was heading to Cincinnati for the Flying Pig 3-way (10k, 5k, half) it was lots of fun but due to poor planning, we had to leave Thing 1 behind for her Conference Track final. I felt awful. This year I kept this weekend clear and will be at that Conference Track Final.

nowgetfit

I’m excited to be heading out on a blog “field trip” with some of my fellow Fitfluential Ambassadors! I couldn’t be more excited to be visiting behind the scenes at NOW Foods, truly one of my favorite health brands. I’ll be tweeting and instagramming all the juice under the hashtag #NOWgetfit.

What’s up with you? Do racing/training conflicts ever make you feel guilty? Do you let mergers in?

I always let mergers in. I’m a very polite driver. Usually.

Can’t wait to see how you put those bike skillz to use! 🙂

I let mergers in front of me. When I change lanes, I always let other cars go first before I switch, too. Defensive driving all the way (thanks to my high school driver’s ed teacher for embedding that into my brain)!

Yikes – that FPT training sounds torturous. I’ve long said that 5Ks are my nemesis because it pretty much involves running at puke-speed the whole time. Doing that kind of sprinting over three days and three sports? WOW!!!

    I love it 🙂
Your mad skillz are going to translate to a great TRI !!
When I was injured I had a polar monitor I used in the water, always amazed at high your heart can go in water!
I just let the mergers in, even if they irritate me lol

Now that song is going through my head! I don’t always let mergers in. Sometimes. Depends on my mood and if they’re nice about it…

When I leave work, someone has to let me out (no traffic light in heavy traffic). Usually, this happens within a minute or two. But sometimes, it does NOT. I always try to pay it forward because I know what it feels like to wait on the kindness of others. I’m a food seeking missile, with no excuse!

Don’t even get me started on the racing/training conflicts – the guilt can be terrible! That FPT training sounds intense! Nice job with the mad bike skills 🙂

I try to be considerate and let people in, but we have such horrible drivers here where I live, that most of the time I end up regretting it when someone insists on driving 10 under the limit 😡

Glad that your swimming is improving.
Your 3 days workout sounds very interesting.
Here the drivers are not so polite but …we (the runners) succeed in surviving…..

My son’s Conference meet is mid-week, which is good and bad. I’d say I’m 50/50 on letting mergers in, depending on the attitude the merger takes.

ahhh race conflicts! I’ve been wanting to run the Brooklyn Half Marathon for 3 years but always have a conflict! Next year I WILL run it! As for mergers, the only time I don’t let them in is when they try to cut in front of a huge line of cars. Get in line and wait your turn like the rest of us!

Its always hard to balance racing calendar with real calendars. Its hard to make sure that one doesn’t take over the other.

3 FTP/threshold tests in a row!?! Makes me want to cry a little. Excellent info to have for your training plan, though.

Wowsa! You go girl!!! I always let mergers in, well, 98% of the time, LOL!!

You are awesome! Yes, I love that my polar is waterproof! 🙂 And… yes, I let mergers in the majority of the time. 🙂

Racing/training conflicts always make me feel guilty!! I try not to let it since that’s basically my only “me time” thing I do for myself, but still…it is difficult.

I let people merge if they’re polite about it. You know, that whole turn signal thing! 😉

I did not know Polars could go in the water! This is great news. I don’t have one but I intend to get one soon. Good job with your FTP – it sounds intense and I am pretty low on stamina these days but I plan to take some new actions to correct that.

Your FTP testing sounds intense! Way to go on the bike! I always usually let mergers in but if they do it to cut others off, I try not to let them in if possible. Excited to hear more about your blog “field trip”!

I might have given a certain 50 mile race 1 more college try except it is drill weekend (Chris has to work) and I’m way to wimpy to go alone!!!
The drop-off thing drives me crazy for sure – always an idiot who thinks they are 50x more important than everyone else.

I despise people who speed up so you can’t get in. I tend to cut them off because I am just like you are a jerk and I am getting in, I guess that’s the New Yorker in me. Hopefully I don’t get rear ended one day. Have fun on you FitFluential field trip, sounds awesome.

  24. Char says

    May 2, 2015 at 4:40 pm

I usually let mergers in but it depends on the situation. If the traffic is slow I always do. If I’m moving fast then I generally don’t. And then there’s the occasional day when I play bitch just because I’m in a cranky mood.

  25. GiselleR @ Diary of an ExSloth says

    May 4, 2015 at 10:16 am

I don’t drive but I’d like to think that I’ll let mergers in. But, not if they’re rude about it i.e. speeding down the shoulder or the wrong lane to avoid traffic and trying to push in from of me. I don’t react well to rude people haha so I’ll prob be the one pretending not to see them in that case 😳

  26. Stephanie (@FitMomTraining) says

    May 4, 2015 at 1:49 pm

I’ll usually let mergers in. I figure even if they’re jerks, I’d rather be behind a jerk than in front of one.

I would love to do some sort of testing just to learn a bit more about my body- that’s interesting about the bike- especially since you crushed it in the race not even giving it all out attention. also- I kinda like your flying pig medal better than mine this year 🙂
