My Child-Free Week

August 8, 2015

The kiddos flew out to NC to visit their grandparents last week. In fact even the Caveman was away on business for a couple of days , leaving me and my dog and fish posse all on our own.

What’s a mom to do with a big fat slice of FREE-TIME?

speedwork

An evening workout. That’s right. This early bird hit up the track. In the evening. Mother Nature and her ridiculous humidity made me do it. No actually I had to shuffle my workouts so I could make it to the airport to get the kiddos. Crazy having the flexibility of an evening workout.

Hit the Beach. ‘Nuff said. There may have been the teeny tiniest bit of open water swims here….maybe.

Beach Reads. Make Success Mandatory. By Jeremy Scott.

IMG_0468

This is a quick (70 pages, think one sitting), impactful read. It’s like having a life coach and cheerleader in your pocket. If you find yourself straying off course, this book will remind you of your purpose and motivate you to stop worrying and wishing and pursue it. The book is comprised of 22 exercises, all with a different purpose. It’s a book I’ll be picking up again and again for inspiration. Find it on Amazon here.

Essentialism. The Disciplined Pursuit of Less. By Greg Mckeown. This one’s about being productive vs busy. How to focus on your priorities and let the minutia go. Excellent read.

Purge. After reading Essentialism, it was the perfect time to excavate Thing 2’s bottomless closet. Oh goodness the stuff I pulled out of there. My closet was next. Then the playroom. Now the burning question: the Goodwill stuff is clear. Is a consignment shop a viable choice for the rest? There’s a boatload of outgrown stuff, some with tags on…sigh…from great brand names and designer labels. But there are no consignment shops for kids’ clothes less than an hour away from here so I hesitate to schlep. After reading reviews of some of them, maybe it’s not worth the hassle and I’m better off donating?

What would you do with some time to yourself? Any experience with consignment or resale shops?

I just had one of those awesome weeks…and you know what I did! Besides seeing friends and working out…a whole lot of nothing. It was great!

Personally, I don’t even mess with consignment shops, unless something is really pricey. Goodwill is my friend. I gave a bag to my cleaning lady too.

I have gotten to the point where I just give it away. A week without the husband is what I need. Best part hands down would be no meals to cook.

Ahh freedom! I can’t remember when I last had some. If someone’s away there’s always another around. I might have to run away from home for a while to actually get some.

There are online consignment type places too. I don’t have names, since my stuff isn’t normally designer.

I have a shop where I do sell back some clothes; not consignment, they just give you a pittance. The rest goes to goodwill.

my hubby is gone and I have the house to myself, what to do, what to do? Whatever we want! and eat whatever I want and watch Bravo tv! LOL! It is all good. Consignment shops end up to be a hassle sometimes and you don’t get such it seems like, I am better off with the tax deduction 🙂

Ah what a dream this would be for me! LOL!! I am a consignment shop queen! I love to try and get some money back for clothes, so that of course I can buy more! LOL! Try Platos closet for your daughter’s clothes!

I love the occasional weeks/weekends alone! Have you tried ThredUp? They send you a bag/box and you send the clothes and they sell them on consignment and you get $$. It is prob not as much as a local consignment shop but easy and more than nothing! http://www.thredup.com/r/QWAFSK

I can’t remember that the last time I had that kind of me time – how nice!

I’ve never gone the consignment shop route. I usually donate, pass some things along to a friend whose boys are younger than mine, and occasionally sell a few things through an online “yard sale” moms in my town set up.

I adore days to myself. I go running when I want and then the day is mine! I can actually clean the house in half the time and still have time to watch my favorite cooking shows while enjoying a quiet lunch. Pure bliss…

Funny, I am just finishing up a weekend solo–it was heaven! I did some cleaning out, some working out, a long run w/ friends, and watched a movie. So nice to have the break, no? As to consignment vs. donating–I always go with donating simply b/c it really is easiest, at least here. Sometimes simple wins! (and I want to read that book).

Good luck getting back to the real world when they all return.

Sounds like a great week. It feels so good to clean out unnecessary things – glad you had some time to de-clutter and de-stress!

My last two sons were close in age and most everything was worn twice. I’m pretty good about taking stuff back if I don’t like it and wearing the heck out of stuff that I do. By the time I get around to a purge, it’s all Goodwill. Nothing sell-able here. If I had some free time, I might go to a movie or the spa.

    Enjoy your free time!
When I have a whole day (it means the morning) all for me, and it never happens in summer, I do a workout and after I have a thermal bath.

I love purging rooms and it’s been a really long time since I have tackled anything close to deep cleaning. I need that book!!
I just donate. I tried consignment a few years ago, but nothing sold in the time agreement.

these days my life is taken over by work and the wedding. my free time now is blogging and reading blogs. i’m SO behind. i’m ready to get back to my “normal” with more free time 🙂 and yes, i consign with thredup.com. they mail you a bag and you fill it and they give you $$ (and they take kids clothes too)

marciashealthyslice I'm a working mom who, as part of a mid-life challenge, decided to run a marathon for kicks. I didn't plan on it becoming a hobby, but it did. I qualified for Boston at my second marathon and finished the 6 World Marathon Majors in London in 2019. Set no small goals. You never know what you're capable of until you try!
