Marathons are Like Weddings

September 18, 2015

It’s that time of the month to get some whining done. I’m linking up with Holly and Wendy and doing just that. Since I’m tapering, there’s no shortage of complaints here.

running wedding

Running a marathon is like getting married.

You plan for months.

You have a special outfit (or three).

You’re committed to your training.

Just like wedding week, the taper makes you stressed out and stabby.

Inevitably…

fuel bottles

It takes a village….and lots of drinking.

…stuff happens. I ran out of my go-to sports drink, but that’s not a big deal.

I decided to finally replace some of my old fuel belt bottles and was beside myself with joy to score extra, replacement caps on Amazon. (Because good Lord, is it just me or do your caps get gross?) But when said caps were delivered, I discovered they’d been totally redesigned and the new caps don’t fit the old bottles. Don’t you hate when companies do this? Planned obsolescence. Genius or royal pain in the behind, your choice.

and then…..THEN….

No thanks to my rapidly expanding middle-aged gut, the Velcro on my fuel belt decided no mas. So now I’ve got bottles with caps that don’t fit them and NO fuel belt to carry them in. First world problems.

What do you have to whine about? Do you use fuel bottles, how often do you replace them?

My big thing to whine about is my fridge is broken 🙁 Only two years old. Lame, and I’m whining ha. Hope you have a good weekend!

At least you figured out this stuff before the race! I hate that feeling where you wait until the last minute to take care of something and then realize its out of stock/doesn’t fit/won’t be delivered in time/etc. But that really is annoying!

Oh I love that…planned obsolescence! That is one of my biggest pet peeves! Apple does a great job with that…changing the charger adapters with each new iPhone–we have a ton of obsolete charger cords here…

I used to use fuel belts but I switched to a hydration pack that is more like the backpack style because then it can carry lots of water and for me it’s more comfortable on my back then around my waist.

No can do on the fuel belts…they are irritating by their own merit. Of course they change the spout on PURPOSE so you HAVE to buy the new bottles. And I’m betting the bottles wouldn’t fit into your old belt either. I wish I had a planned outfit, or three. Since I’ve been training in Hades, I have no idea what to wear for a “normal” weather marathon. Alas, no opportunity to try that cute outfit beforehand. I’m seriously thinking about running in my ratty everyday shorts. I appreciate you linking up with us!

That is really annoying about the bottles. I don’t use mine enough for them to have gotten too gross (I’m normally with a big water bottle on the treadmill or a camelbak if I’m doing a long run outside). Now cleaning camelback mouthpieces and straws could be the subject of an entire post!

LOL. But not really. I can understand the frustration ! I just bought a soft water bottle that goes in a handheld contraption. So I haven’t had to replace anything. Yet. But I will keep this in mind !

Oh no! That WOULD be annoying.

Hand held water bottles always fit your hand, no matter your weight. Just sayin’.

Sorry to hear! That is very annoying! I am not a fan of the hydration belts anymore either! I love the simply hydration bottle that I can just stick in my flipbelt.

My whine is that after a lovely weekend interstate I came home to a newly painted toilet. Yes, it desperately needed to be painted but my darling husband chose the wrong colour (after I’d left a sample with him) and it’s hideous! Then I find he’s painted the inside of the wardrobe and in the process rearranged all my clothes. And he forgot to take the list when shopping for fruit and veg and basically I had to do the whole lot. His heart is in the right place but seriously!??

Ugh. I’ve always thought those fuel bottles would mean too much dishwashing. I’m using the Orange Mud Hydraquiver single with a 16 oz bottle or a Nathan Hydration pack for longer runs.

I am not a fuel belt girl, I have a CamelBak, but that gets gross to and has to have new parts a lot.

Haha, so true!! I feel like all I do is whine lately. My hubby has been out of town for 5 weeks and I’m about done being a single parent!

marciashealthyslice I'm a working mom who, as part of a mid-life challenge, decided to run a marathon for kicks. I didn't plan on it becoming a hobby, but it did. I qualified for Boston at my second marathon and finished the 6 World Marathon Majors in London in 2019. Set no small goals. You never know what you're capable of until you try!
