Running and Skating and Freezing

January 17, 2016

Here’s the week in workouts:

Monday: Plyo intervals
Tuesday: Run 4 miles
Wednesday: Strength/Yoga
Thursday: Run 5 miles
Friday: Rest
Saturday: Run 10 miles
Sunday: Strength/Swim

It was high school finals week here. Tension ran high. Mom’s taxi service ran overtime with the unusual schedule. I was so proud of the way the week went. Thing 1 did very well too.
Finals ended on Thursday so Thing 1 and I celebrated on Friday with a trek into the city.

willistower1

It was a grey, drizzly but mild day. Willis tower was shrouded in fog. We met the Caveman for lunch at Green Street Meats, one of his favorite haunts.

IMG_1565

BBQ anyone? It was delish, although no help at all with operation drop 10 lbs. We burned off lunch by heading to Millennium Park where we banged out a virtual 5k sponsored by the United States Figure Skating Association in honor of the National Championships this week.

figure skating 5k

So yeah this 5k was not running. It was ice skating. If you’re new here, ice skating is my everything. It’s the reason I wasn’t a runner much earlier. I was too busy ice skating and I still skate. As much as possible. I can skate a helluva lot faster than I can run, just saying.

The rest of the weekend was fairly relaxing and low-key. Girl scouts, a sleepover, a killer strength workout and prep for the new week. Oh and lots of football, not that I paid too much attention.

mod pizza

We tried a new pizza place in town. MOD Pizza. It was great, although again, the weightloss initiative. Thank heavens for 10-mile runs. It’s all about balance, right?

Sunday we dropped back below zero so I was glad to have my long run done on Saturday. Strategy and flexibility will take you far.

Here’s how the #workout week went and other fun stuff. #weeklywrap #running

Wow, seriously impressed with the ice skating race! I went ice skating this weekend and I am NOT very good at it, haha. That pizza looks great.

I haven’t ice skated in forever. I’m better on wheels – I used to play roller derby ๐Ÿ™‚

The big fun this weekend was going to a baby shower in NYC – I rarely go into the city.

I’m super impressed you ice skated as a youngster and still do Growing up where I did, it was all about roller skating. We thought it was so cool, especially if you had “speed skates”. We did eventually get an ice rink but I never mastered it…just good enough to stay on my feet. It’s all about calories in versus calories out. I think your “out” won this week. Thanks for linking up Marcia. Have a great week!

Ice skating race … that sounds awesome! The bbq looks delicious. I too am having trouble kicking the holiday extra eating. Today we made cookies. Cookies. Not helping. Nope.

I would totally have been all over that ice skating race. I might not be a pretty skater, but I grew up with a pond in my backyard! I can move it move it!

Isn’t it great when exams are over? I love that tension release that the whole family feels. It’s good that you all got to celebrate together.

Skating is great exercise:) I was a good rollerskating person, but always wobbly on ice skates, but I still liked it. It has been years now…
Flexibility is good, you got to seize the moment ๐Ÿ™‚ Saturday I ran errands all day and came home and biked because it was a nice day. I am glad I did, this morning winter came back.

I bought a pair of ice skates when I lived in Minnesota and we had an ice rink at the park across the street. I wasn’t very good (like most sports when you learn as an adult) but I have lots of appreciation for those that can skate well. Hoping your Operation Lose 10 Pounds goes well this week. I had a big time sweet tooth binge almost every day this past week. Finally got my act together on Thursday and Friday – still ate a lot but at least cut down on the sugar. I suppose I need to step on the scale tomorrow. Have a great week Marcia!

So fun you did the 5k! I know they had an “official” one in Minnesota. My coach friends are trying to arrange one in Chicagoland!

Cold weather in Iowa, too. I made it outside (briefly) on Saturday, but hibernated inside after returning from church. I used to ice skate as a kid…..no formal lessons or training, but I actually did alright for a total klutz who can barely walk on dry ground without tripping on something. I’m pretty sure I can skate much faster than I can run as well ๐Ÿ˜‰

I love that you did a virtual ice skating 5k! That’s so cool! I am terrible on skates so the thought of doing that freaks me out, but I love that you’re such a good skater.

I couldn’t imagine skating a 5k! I dont think I have ice skated in about 12 years or so, and I have probably only gone a handful of times in my life.
I’ve escaped the cold for a few days in Florida, although it’s not as warm as usual around here. Today is going to be around 60, but I’ll take it compared the the freezing temps up north!

Hello from the linkup! An ice skating 5K! I’ve never heard of that! So cool that you got to do something you love and posted a fast 5K. ๐Ÿ™‚

My operation lose 5 lbs is going much the same way, all the good food is killing me! I was never much of an ice skater although I liked to pretend I was, it was always one of my favorite winter olympic events!

  15. Pam says

    January 18, 2016 at 7:32 am

I love that you did an ice skating race. Growing up in New England with cold winters, we spent lots of time skating and I would love to skate regularly again. But it is not to be in North Carolina! Good luck with the operation drop 10. (visited through the linkup!)

I used to love to skate. I wasn’t fast (I don’t do anything fast!) or good at it, I just enjoyed it. Not a whole lot of opportunity in TX (although surprisingly a few, for a while, anyway).

When we first moved here, before I really got into running, I used to go skating once a week.

    I don’t skate any longer. ๐Ÿ™

I am impressed with the ice skating. I do not think i can even hold my balance on ice skates. Sounds like you had a nice weekend

Mmmm that BBQ looks good! The other night Paul and I went out to eat at an Italian place, but there was an Outback right next door. As we were walking through the lot for Italian, I said to Paul, “I wonder if this place loses a lot of business to people smelling the Outback and heading over there instead!”

  19. Tricia@MissSippipiddlin says

    January 18, 2016 at 10:18 am

I could roller skate but we just didn’t have ice skating around us, I can stay up but that’s about all I can say about that! Going fast, ummm I couldn’t ๐Ÿ™ It’s great exercise and a very graceful sport, I do love watching it though and I’m envious of those of you who can do it.

I think you said it right: Balance is the key. Operation 10 lbs is not off track, you got to eat and your still making healthy choices. You’ll reach your goal in no time.
I’m ready for TOTR! Have a great week Marcia!

The pizza looks delicious!!! I am afraid to roller skate cause I’m afraid to fall.

I spent the weekend on my couch catching up on a few TV shows. Doing the same today while I grade papers. Oh, and I need to head out to the gym for an interval run. I have actually been enjoying them.

    Stay warm.

An ice skating 5K? How fun is that! I can’t even remember the last time I was on skates. Temps are dropping again here too – as long as it doesn’t snow I can embrace my inner winter goddess ๐Ÿ˜‰

  22. Mary Beth Jackson says

    January 18, 2016 at 12:05 pm

I loved to ice skate when I was a kid, so much fun! Now we don’t have very many options for that here ๐Ÿ™‚ Balance is the key, a little splurge is good for the soul and reminds you why you make great choices the other 95% of the time ๐Ÿ™‚ Happy Monday Coach!

I love ice skating, but in hockey skates. It was my first love. When I was a scholarship rower I would go do open skate as a cross-training activity. I miss having time for that.
