Training in the Dead of Winter

February 14, 2016

Before I get to other stuff, here’s how the training week went:

Monday: Rest
Tuesday: Yoga
Wednesday: Strength
Thursday: Run 5 miles
Friday: Bike and Swim
Saturday: 8 miles on the mill
Sunday: Strength

Highlights

This week was a little messed up. Do you ever get the feeling germs are closing in around you? It seems like everyone is sick right now. Blame the crapola winter weather and being closed up indoors way too much. Although, knock wood, I feel fine so far, my workout week was a little off. Due to Thing 1’s crazy school schedule I missed my usual Tuesday run and subbed in a brief strength/core workout.

training swimming
I finally hit the pool on Friday. This swim left much to be desired. The dizzy, lightheaded jazz was happening again. Blech.

training swim
We were back in the deep freeze by the weekend, so I hurried up and got my “long” run done on the mill before the Olympic Marathon Trials started in LA. How much fun was that to watch? The mill run went way better than I could have hoped, especially since the pain cave TV is still not working. It is amazing what we can do when we get our head around it and slay those suck monkeys.

Then it was off to a Girl Scout meeting. And Girl Scout Cookie pickup. Avoiding the cookies is going to be a total challenge.

Caveman and I celebrated Valentine’s Day in our usual Sunday spot. At the gym. Leg day. Working legs is a killer but I do love my strength training. I always will. The rest of the day was low key. We finished our workout, got some grocery shopping done and made it home just in time for the snow to start. It’s about time we got some snow. I was feeling deprived. Except now? Surprise! Thing 2 is sick. Barf. Thankfully school’s out for President’s Day. 5 weeks until spring break!

How was your training week? Did you watch the Olympic trials? Still time to enter my giveaway!

weekly Wrapup

I’m linking up with Holly and Tricia as usual for the Weekly Wrap.

You aren’t kidding when you say it seems like the whole world is sick. Because they are…I’m off to man the sick clinic this morning. Friday it was all cough, cough, cough. I’m not expecting anything different for today!

    Hope Jillian feels better!

Oh no, no fun having a sickie in the house, especially when it’s a day off school!

I love that you went to the gym together on Valentines day!

Im shocked i haven’t gotten sick this winter with all the people at work who have been coughing and sneezing around me. Im not sure how you get yourself to swim when its so cold! Even though its indoors I still feel like getting in water would be the last thing Id want to do. But good for you for having such a solid week of workouts!

I feel like every kid I work with is sick right now. It’s everywhere!

The marathon trials were so inspiring! It made me want to get out and run even though I got my run in before they started. I can’t believe how fast they are!

Training has been veryyyyyyyyyyyyy blah and inconsistent. I’m beginning to wonder what on earth is going on ——> under-overtraining?!

Side note: Love all of the tights!<3

I got my head cold MLK week. Bleck! I felt like I was getting it in time for Christmas, but somehow I was able to delay it. I work at a university so my building can be a standing petri dish. I hope Thing 2 can bounce back quickly and not pass on anything.

It seems like somebody is always sick around my house. We had a low key Valentine’s Day. I’m not really a fan anyway. I’m trying my best to avoid Girl Scout Cookies. My favorite was always Samoas — even though I think they have a new name now. Like a total space cadet, I forgot about the Olympic Marathon Trials. I hope you stay well Marcia. Thanks for linking with us!

Honestly, February is the worst for feeling good! Everyone I know up here in Alaska is a mess over the increasing daylight (for some reason it really ramps up our Seasonal Affective Disorder) and everyone’s workouts have been really blah and we’re all getting sick. And of course we have no snow to make it better ๐Ÿ™ But it looks like you still got in a great week of workouts!

We don’t have Olympic trials for the marathon like you do. Our athletes are chosen by their performances leading into the Olympics. They have to have run a qualifying time and then it goes on who’s times are fastest.

OK those capris you’re sporting are just too cute! Please share where you got them. Good luck avoiding the Girl Scout cookies – thin mints are my kryptonite!

Here’s hoping you can stay ahead of those germs! And I love those capris you’re wearing on the mill.

I don’t buy GS cookies. Well, any cookies, really. Too tempting. Yes, I was a GS back in the day, and yes, I sold my share of them, but cookies are a big weakness of mine.

I hope the polar vortex doesn’t continue too long ! We are having colder temps this week = low thirties. Fine by me. It did rain a lot last week and I had to switch up my schedule to avoid the wetness. Did OK until I got caught in a downpour on Tuesday….
We have been lucky that germs have been kept at bay so far !

LOL slay those suck monkeys! Sorry to hear you have sick one at home. That’s stinks. I’m still trying to get over my chest congestion so I will be off of grandchild restriction! I haven’t seen my babies for a freaking week. Good luck not letting those germs close in on you! Stay strong!!

I have not been successful in avoiding the girl scout cookies. I bought 5 boxes on Saturday and have already eaten 1.5 (okay, more like 2) boxes. Ugh. And yes, I get the germophobia this time of year, big time. I was washing my hands like a crazy person on my business trips! Good luck staying germ-free!!

Dang how do you get your hubs to spend Valentine’s Day in the gym?? The sickness always has a way of finding you. It’s like the harder you try the faster they fine you. I hope everyone gets well fast!!
I do love the pattern of your leggings. ๐Ÿ™‚ have a great week lady!!!

I love that you and the hubby work out together!! I definitely watched the trials, I couldn’t take my eyes off of it! My hubby thought it was like watching paint dry, which is funny because he likes to run. Not as much as me I guess ๐Ÿ˜‰ Hope everyone is feeling better soon!

marciashealthyslice I'm a working mom who, as part of a mid-life challenge, decided to run a marathon for kicks. I didn't plan on it becoming a hobby, but it did. I qualified for Boston at my second marathon and finished the 6 World Marathon Majors in London in 2019. Set no small goals. You never know what you're capable of until you try!
