Runner Slang

July 18, 2016

This week our Tuesday’s on the Run topic is runner slang. You know, “code” words or phrases you and your running friends use to refer to running stuff.

runner slang

Me? I’ve got a few. Ok maybe more, but I’ll keep it short:

Fish. This is 5-ish miles. Maybe just over 5, maybe just under. If you read the MHS Facebook page, chances are good you’ve seen this one. A fish can have a modifier. Sunfish, Codfish (that’s 5-ish run at the Crack of Dawn), frozen fish (obvious, right?). The possibilities are infinite.

Beast. A beast = 10 miles. Again there are modifiers. Hilly beast, chilly beast, hairy beast, the list goes on.

Character-builder. This can be a training run or race that gets tough. Really tough, and you manage to push through. We learn something from the sucky ones.

Run for the Roses.ย Attempting to Boston qualify.

BBTN. This stands for Barely Better Than Nothing. It’s a really short run of questionable quality that you sort of phone in. But something’s always better than nothing…usually.

Do you have any slang terms you use to refer to your #running? Stop by and tell us! #totr #runchat

Never heard of “fish”. That’s clever. Sadly I have no slang!

Love that you use “fish” and “beast” with modifiers to talk about your 5 and 10 milers! “Character builder” is a good one too- I like that you put a positive spin on a tough run.

  3. Erica @ Erica Finds says

Funny – I have been running forever and have never heard of any of these! The one that trips non-runners up is a simple “PR.” I have been asked what that is a bunch by friends and family. And LSD. Like – are you doing drugs!?

  4. Susie @ Suzlyfe says

    July 19, 2016 at 5:34 am

Oooo these are great and some are new to me! Chase the unicorn is another Boston phrase. And LSD is not an illegal substance lol

I don’t really use slang except for LRS, and that’s just to abbreviate stuff. My college was pretty good at using acronyms for everything.

  6. Michelle @ LivelyChicken says

    July 19, 2016 at 7:14 am

Haha I love “codfish”! And I’ll have to remember that I’m building character the next time I have a bad run!

  7. Rachel says

    July 19, 2016 at 7:15 am

I’m surprised I have no code words! Besides the usual LSD, SOS, etc.

  8. HoHo Runs says

RTH (Run Through Hell) typically reserved for the worst heat/humidity days. I ran a fish this morning! Mmm…probably a Stinky Fish or Sweaty Fish.

I’m really out of it–I didn’t know any of these!! I don’t know of any code words, so clearly I need to brush up on some lingo. ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. Michelle says

    July 19, 2016 at 9:10 am

Oh these are fun! I hadn’t heard of several of these. ๐Ÿ™‚

I love your slang! I really do not have running slang but we have soooooooooooo many made up words related to our cats.

  12. Karen says

Character building… maybe you should put my picture there today LOL
my slang..sweatfest..sloth speed…or unicorns and rainbows ๐Ÿ™‚ If I see these creatures, I’ve had a good day!

Lately it seems everything hates me. I started to write a reply and it just vanished into thin air.

Never heard of ANY of these — they’re great! And no, I have no code words, which is why I didn’t write on the subject but I love yours!

  14. Emily @ Out and About says

    July 19, 2016 at 10:10 am

Wow – I’ve never heard of any of these terms but I like them! I’ve noticed most of us Americans use PR a lot, but many nonAmericans use PB. When I first saw that, I thought it was peanut butter! The teenager in me still giggles at the word fartlek, LOL.

  15. alexandra @ my urban family says

    July 19, 2016 at 10:34 am

I’ve never heard of Fish. I think you may have just made that one up ;-P

  16. Marcia says

Alexandra I totally made it up!

  17. Ana says

    July 19, 2016 at 11:32 am

    Fish! I like that one!!

My brother sent me a text a while back and asked me if I wanted to do a nickel and Dime… and then said I should know what that means! I tried to act like I did… but I had guessed Kilometers, not miles.

  18. Patty says

    July 19, 2016 at 1:32 pm

Ha- love the new terms! I like Fish. I’ll have to steal that one.

  19. Juliana says

    July 19, 2016 at 1:51 pm

ive never heard any of these-I need to step up my running slang!

  20. Running schlub says

    July 19, 2016 at 2:03 pm

Great slang terms. I typically use descriptive words to correlate my outcome or status of the run. My legs were “trash”, I had to “grind” all the typical running terms. My mission is to come up with some slang terms now, I’m on it

  21. Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says

    July 19, 2016 at 2:09 pm

Well you definitely taught me some new running terms! Talking in running code can be fun sometimes!

  22. Sharon says

    July 19, 2016 at 3:42 pm

Nice! I don’t have any slang terms, but I love your fish and beast slang! I’ll have start using them. ๐Ÿ™‚

  23. Abby @BackatSquareZero says

  24. MCM Mama Runs says

I’ve never heard any of these. Love Fish – too funny that you have modifiers for it.

  25. Mary Beth Jackson says

I learned something here! I have never heard of any of these! Let’s see Thursday I have 5 miles on the schedule- I think I am a sun-fish ๐Ÿ™‚

  26. RFC says

We have SO MANY terms we use daily. I think the most frequent one around our house is “cankles”. My partner and I have both had issues with Achilles and posterior tibial tendon issues, so we just refer to them as our “cankles” (because it’s kind of the calf and ankle area)

  27. jill conyers says

    July 20, 2016 at 6:00 am

I’ve never heard of fish. Running, like most things, has its own language.

  28. Jessica S says

    July 20, 2016 at 6:41 am

Love the “fish”es – I haven’t seen those before. It’s interesting how communities come up with their own vocabularies. ๐Ÿ™‚

  29. vicki says

    Those are some great terms
