Olympic Running in Rio

August 1, 2016

The opening ceremonies are starting in Rio this week so what better time to talk everything Olympic Running on Tuesdays on the Run? Tell us which Olympic moments inspire you, what running events are your faves, who you’ll be rooting for and anything else you wanna share.

Personally I’m a voracious Olympic games watcher. Any sport, any time, I’ll watch! I have to say I much prefer the opening ceremonies to the closing ones (so sad when that torch is extinguished). This time around, I’ll be watching the Olympics from Ireland (I’m actually heading there now) so I’ll probably need to hole up in a pub somewhere in the middle of the night to watch (not complaining). According to the schedule, I think I’ll be home before most of the track and field events get underway.

Running Events

Yes please! I’ll watch as much as I can. LOVE the sprinters. Love the relays. And as far as the marathon goes? Of course I’ll be thrilled if Shalane and Amy do well. But if I have to pick a fave?

It’s all Desi, all the time. She’s SO strong, SO consistent and has finished second too many times. Her DNF due to injury at the summer Olympics in London was heartbreaking. I want this to be HER games.

Maybe more than the athletes favored to win, I super love the human interest stories. The ones that show the years of work and dedication necessary to dream of a spot on an Olympic team. Truly everyone there is already a winner.

Your turn: Will you watch? Favorite Olympic sport? All-time fave Olympic moment? Who do you pick to win the marathon?

I cannot wait to watch! Obviously I love the track events but swimming and gymnastics are right up there. Wish I could hole up in an Irish pub to watch ๐Ÿ™‚ Have a great trip!

I love all the events! I am an Olympic junkie. With a gymnast in the house, I’m really looking forward to gymnastics!

    Have a fun trip!

I’ll absolutely be watching as many track and field events as I can, but I also love the sports like fencing, archery, rowing. Sports I can’t find on TV outside of the Olympics.

I’ll be watching if I can get it over my phone! We don’t have any television in our home. So it’s up to good streaming. Time for me to do some research on that! We love watching all the different kinds of sports but I specially like to watch diving for the summer Olympics. Track is , of course, at the top too!

I love watching all of the Olympics, but definitely a fan of gymnastics the most. I need to remember to look at the schedule so I don’t miss anything!

I confess I am not a big watcher. I typically catch clips and you tubes and catch up that way ๐Ÿ™‚ I always watch the start of everything then fade out…I do that with all the big races as well.

I agree – her drive and consistency are impressive. Fingers crossed that all of our women do well!

I gotta admit that while I watch track & field, I don’t really follow it much.

Love Gymnastics! That vault from Kerri Strug when she was injured — now that was inspiring!

One of my favorite moments was the swimming relay where the team pulled ahead and ensured that gold for Michael Phelps. It was true teamwork and amazing to watch happen!

I don’t really watch the Olympics… but then I don’t watch much TV either. I have always enjoyed watching the swimming, diving and the sprinters.

Safe travels! Can’t wait to hear more about your adventures in Ireland!

I LOVE Desi. She is so inspirational and her smile just lights up the room. It was amazing watching her tear it up during the Olympic trials. I’ll definitely be rooting for her, too!

I love love watching the amazing athletes! They’re all wonderful but my favorite moments are when the athletes break records. The work and dedication that goes into their training inspires me.

    Have a wonderful weekend Marcia!

I am really excited for the marathon event too and some of the other track and field. I really have had fun watching some of the sports I don’t usually watch like cycling and beach volleyball this past weekend. It’s so intense and heartbreaking at times!

Yeah, an athlete like that is full resistance! ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m a fan of Michael Phelps, this is the last time he took part in the Olympic so I watched all the races of his and supported him. Very happy he won 5 golds and 1 silver medal.

marciashealthyslice I'm a working mom who, as part of a mid-life challenge, decided to run a marathon for kicks. I didn't plan on it becoming a hobby, but it did. I qualified for Boston at my second marathon and finished the 6 World Marathon Majors in London in 2019. Set no small goals. You never know what you're capable of until you try!
