April Progress Report

April 24, 2017

Is April flying by or what? This time next week it’ll be May, so that means it’s time to grade our month on this week’s Tuesdays on the Run Linkup. Let’s get started shall we? For consistency, I’m grading the goals I set back at the beginning of the year.Β

Running: A

I’ve got a renewed sense of enthusiasm for running, because I have a few races coming up that I’m excited about. The Utah Valley Half Marathon in June (join me and use MHS15 to save 15%), RocknRoll Chicago, the Berlin Marathon in September and RocknRoll Vegas in November. I’ve been good about getting all of my runs in, and especially good about banging out speedwork. The one concern I have, is endurance. I’ve got a few double-digit runs under my belt but because I haven’t yet raced this year, that is a work in progress.

Although my Vo2 Max progress wasn’t as dramatic as it was last month, it still managed to tick up a couple more points. I’ll take it.

Swimming: B-

I’m still swimming every week once or twice but I continue to struggle to stay in the pool longer than 30 minutes. Sometimes I’m lucky if I swim for 20 minutes. It’s pathetic really. Swimming will definitely go on the backburner as soon as I get my triathlon out of the way.

Crosstrain: A

Between CrossFit, spinning, corework, drills and yoga I’m doing just fine on this front. It’s how I get away with relatively low running mileage. It’s been my success formula since I started distance running. Especially if you are over 40, crosstraining is key.

Weightloss: B

I’ve been on the methylation protocol for almost 2 months now. At first I could feel a significant difference. But mid-month when I have what I suspect is an estrogen surge, which is already high, I feel weak, winded and my heart rate is through the roof even at the snaily-est of paces. Part of me entertains replacing my runs with a different workout when I feel this way. They are soul crushing. All that said, I’ve lost 6 lbs. I’d still love to drop another 10 though.

Clean Up Diet: C

All year so far I’d been so good about eating really well and avoiding most added sugars. That all came to a screaming end this month. As soon as our local frozen custard stand opened for the season, we were there. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t feel too bad about enjoying a frozen custard from time to time. Honestly I don’t feel bad about it at all. But it sure did spark my sugar cravings. Ugh.

Fun: B

There’s been significant improvement in this category. I’ve enjoyed quality time with friends, gotten out to dinner with other couples and have been cooking up BIG race plans with friends for 2018. One can dream! It’s even better when those dreams come together.

May Plan

The biggest dragon I have to slay in May is my triathlon, as well as the teenager’s Sweet 16 party, which happen to be on the same day. I’ll also continue training for the Utah Valley Half and fire up full-on marathon training on May 23.

How was your progress this month? What are you training for? Are you on track with your goals?

Mark your calendar with these topics for May:

  • 5/2: Race Cheats
  • 5/9: Mother’s Day
  • 5/16: Mental Training Tips and Tricks
  • 5/23: Free Topic Tuesday
  • 5/30: Grade your month

So, whatcha got planned for 2018???

I’m still hoping to meet up with you on one of my many trips to Wisconsin!

I cant believe April’s almost over! Nice job with all the cross training. And I wouldn’t say your swimming is pathetic- you’re getting out there weekly and thats what counts!

6 lbs in 2 months is amazing!

The biggest problem with being super strict about diet is at some point you just can’t take it anymore. Finding balance is key, but oh-so-elusive. I’d love to lose just 5. And I wouldn’t sneeze at 10, either, but I don’t want to work ypthat hard.

Have you ever thought of doing duathalons instead of tris? It just shouldn’t be something that doesn’t get you fired up & you make it sound like that’s the case with tris.

The fact that you’re doing any swimming is impressive to me!!

Sounds like you are doing great so far! I still can’t believe the party and the tri are on the same day! My weight has settled down, mostly because I was too lazy to go to the basement and find a snack during our kitchen reno. Now I need to keep the pantry a crap-free zone!

Looks like you had a solid month! I really cannot believe that April is almost over!

Congrats on your weightloss! I’m trying to drop 10 lbs before i start marathon training and it’s SO hard!

What do you have cooking for 2018? Looks like we need to have lunch, girlfriend!

I’m hoping to get this RA into remission and back on track. Maybe I should methylate with you?

Frozen custard. That would be dangerous for me.

Congrats on a solid month of training. I can’t imagine squeezing in swimming and biking and also cross-training. It’s hard enough to find time to run. You rock.

Sounds like a pretty great month! I should join a gym and focus on cross training more. I have a bike but I hate riding on the roads. You inspire me!

This time of year always gives me more motivation to run even if I’m not training for anything!

Can’t wait to ear what you’re dreaming up for 2018!!

So far my mileage has been on track. I was worried about this week, but the rain has been replaced with clouds, but it was moved to next week. I don’t have a treadmill yet, and I don’t have a fitness room anymore. I’ll have to see what next week brings because I would like to have a good start for May.

You have done an amazing job with your running and cross training! I am not a great swimmer so I admire all of you triathletes. You have some great races on schedule! I look forward to following all of your training. I had a great month despite all of my health issues and caught up on my miles. Only a little over 15 more to go to hit 80 for the month! Woo hoo!

So I am intrigued! What’s up for 2018? You are killing these cross training workouts- you could probably carry me down the mountain if you had too- LOL! I am cross the finish line on both feet! Congrats on the pounds- it is tough to do!

I’m still evaluating my April endeavors…over all pleased, though. I love your swimming stuff…not that I want to join you or anything, but I admire you for just getting it done.

Great month! Wow… party AND tri on same day – you’re a wonder woman πŸ™‚ Can’t wait to hear what is in the mix for 2018.

I feel so bad for you and this health thing that makes getting older & the struggles there even worse!

I have not been the best for the first time in a long time. Aging is tough & it wants me to eat less or cleaner or both & I don’t want to! πŸ™‚

    Fun is a good thing!

    HUGE HUGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LOL on the frozen yogurt place! Gotta enjoy it like you say. You will get bored of it soon. I have no doubt you will be great on your tri the swim is less than 30 min anyway so no sweat for you. πŸ™‚

It is seriously flying!! That always happens in months with nicer weather. πŸ™‚

Overall, awesome month for you. Ugh on the sugar- that always happens to me too. I’m not missing it at all, and then I have a sweet dessert and I’m battling cravings for a few weeks!

  20. Laura Bowers says

    April 27, 2017 at 11:26 am

Whoa, a tri and Sweet 16 party on the same day? You’ll deserve a special challenge medal for that. And frozen yogurt. Yum! Now craving that. πŸ˜‰

You had such a busy April, and how in the world is it already May.

marciashealthyslice I'm a working mom who, as part of a mid-life challenge, decided to run a marathon for kicks. I didn't plan on it becoming a hobby, but it did. I qualified for Boston at my second marathon and finished the 6 World Marathon Majors in London in 2019. Set no small goals. You never know what you're capable of until you try!
