MAYhem Continues: Peak Week, Minimal Miles

May 21, 2017

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say this was the toughest week of MAYhem. It’s going to be smooth(er) sailing from here on out. As a result, and because it’s triathlon week, the workouts were a little sparse.

Monday: Rest (sick kiddo home from school)
Tuesday: Unscheduled Rest (sick kiddo home)
Wednesday: Run 3 miles
Thursday:ย Bike-Swim
Friday: Run 4 miles
Saturday: Rest
Sunday: Triathlon

MAYhem has been like a volcano. It rumbled all month then began to smoke and spew, releasing some (not all) of the pressure as each event passed. This week there was lots of spewing:

  • The teenager’s track banquet: I (what was I thinking?) volunteered to help coordinate, setup, serve, cleanup. Out of 115 sets of parents only 7 of us raised our hands. Sigh.
  • My dad’s birthday
  • 5th grade band concert
  • 5th grade field trip
  • Triathlon (race report to come)
  • Haircut, mani/pedi
  • Sweet 16 party

…and because we had some time to kill, we went to ย a “Hedgie 101” class at a local hedgehog breeder. Thing 2 is pushing hard for one for her birthday so I wanted to know all about these critters before I took the plunge…or not.

To make it all just a little more exciting, last Saturday Thing 2 started coughing something fierce. Highly congested to the point she struggled for air. To the dr. we went, who suspected allergies. What?? And prescribed allergy meds, which did nothing. I finally got her to prescribe an inhaler but not before I dragged Thing 2 back to the office. For what? A freaking allergy test. Oh and for the record, the Caveman was away on business for 3 days and returned with the same chest crud “allergy”.

This was the last brick workout of my tri training cycle. That swim put my head in the right place. I knew if I blew the swim, it’d be all mental. Stay tuned for the full tri report.ย

Tri drama. Because it can’t be easy. The final race email showed I was in the dead last wave of the entire triathlon. You may remember the teenager’s Sweet 16 party is later that day. I was hoping the tri would be a get-in get-out affair. Not so much. Crisis was averted though. They allowed me to go off earlier.

Is this month crazy busy for you? Here’s how I’m training through it all. #mayhem #runchat

This week there’s light at the end of the tunnel:

  • High school finals (and I’ll officially have a high school junior on my hands)
  • 5th grade band end-of-year party
  • 2 Graduations/parties
  • My BRF is visiting from Colorado!
  • Taper for the Utah Valley Half Marathon
  • Start Berlin Marathon training!

Do you hear my sigh of relief?

How was your week? Did you race? How do you juggle “all the things?”

It’s that time already!

Time for another edition of the Runfession Friday linkup! Join me right here this Friday and share all of you run, gym, tri, heck all confessions are welcome. I promise you’ll feel better!

Another week of MAYhem to check off ๐Ÿ˜‰ My to-do’s are finally starting to even out, but I’ve been at it since early April. Two more weeks of school (for the last, remaining child), then we’ll have smoother waters, too. I can’t wait to hear more details on your tri!

Glad things will start to calm down for you! I think you need a vacation after all you did in May. I hope your tri went well! Im glad they let you start earlier so you could get out of there on time.

You are such a rockstar for being able to balance everything! I hope that your husband and kiddo are feeling better – that illness sounds just awful!

Congrats on your successful triathlon – I checked you IG ๐Ÿ™‚

Hedgehog breeder? Who knew they existed?

I do not know how you string together a coherent sentence, much less exercise, with all of that going on. My May (which has seemed grueling to me) has been a walk in the park by comparison.

To do lists (when I do them) really do help me. And meditating. And realizing that things don’t have to be perfect.

Glad they let you go off in an earlier wave (and obviously that paid off, too.

So you didn’t get a Zpak after all? Allergy testing? Seriously?

Have fun tonight and relax! Really, you crushed your tri so the party should be a cakewalk. Right?

    Congrats on the triathlon!!

Man, and congrats on balancing and handling everything that was handed to you this week.

A tri and a sweet 16 all in the same day.
You are such a brave woman.

What? People have hedgehogs as pets? Who knew!

It really does sound like mayhem! A lot of big events…I know you can do it ๐Ÿ™‚
Glad the Tri went well today, I hope you are having a great sweet 16!
I feel like everything gets blamed on allergies. Hopefully as the pollen lets up,everyone will feel better. The pollen was bad here last month and it seemed to aggravate everyone at work…even those who normally don’t have allergies.

I do NOT NOT NOT know how you did it/do it as I thought my may was filled with some HEM.
    Youve got this.
    Ive got this.
    When can we nap? September?

I agree that the swim sets the mindset for the whole race. I cannot wait to hear all about it!

  12. Darlene says

And I thought I was busy. At least my activity is only my own so I just get it done.

I ran on Monday, did a sweaty 3.5 race on Thursday and ran a half in cooler temps yesterday. 4 rest days helped a lot.

Ummm, first off, congrats on surviving THAT week! Woah! I find it frustrating when you are the only parent that volunteers for things and then you see the other parents sitting on the side lines doing nothing to help out. Second, congratulations on your triathlon!!!!

I am letting out a sigh of relief with you! I can’t wait to hear about your triathlon!! I am in awe of all of you triathletes! Last week was a bit overwhelming. I think if my teenager had not gotten injured at her last soccer tournament, I would not have felt so overwhelmed. I was getting lots of texts about her Ortho appointment while on my middle little’s field trip in NOLA, but was so thankful for good news. A big sigh of relief she was okay and I made it through an 11 hour field trip with my other daughter. I definitely over celebrated with my husband on our anniversary Wednesday ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ but we needed to unwind. I hope you have a wonderful week Marcia!

You are amazing!! You got more done in one day than I did on a whole week!! I sat down and wrote out the schedule for the week, we have a few things overlapping!! So happy for the holiday coming up!

I bet you slayed that Tri!!

  18. Lesley says

    May 22, 2017 at 12:17 pm

I hope the family starts feeling better. I haven’t had to deal with allergies much, but our weather’s been crazy, I’m sure the pollen doesn’t know what to do.

  19. Tricia says

    May 22, 2017 at 12:50 pm

I am not juggling at all, in fact most of my balls have already hit the ground, so I’m sighing right along with you.
I think you pulled off this week with the sickness, tri and parties, volunteering with flying colors!
No wonder your in beast mode! I hope you enjoy your taper, sure do wish I was meeting you all in Utah.

WOW a hedgehog?? I’ve always wanted one since they’re so cute. and you definitely had a lot going on. Good work!

  21. Mary BEth Jackson says

    May 22, 2017 at 3:22 pm

I hear the sigh but a hedgehog? WTH do you do with that? Is it like owning a dog? Maybe I need one? Can’t wait to hear all about the tri!

  22. Coco says

    May 22, 2017 at 6:51 pm

What a week! I remember when my son needed an inhaler for seasonal allergies — they were that bad, but the doctor saw that right away! Can’t wait to hear more about the tri!

  23. Michelle @ Running with Attitude says

    May 22, 2017 at 7:25 pm

Good grief Marcia and I thought I was crazy busy! Kudos to you for managing it all and crushing your tri! Looking forward to the race recap. Oh and I had no idea people keep hedgehogs as pets!

  24. Jenn says

    May 22, 2017 at 7:54 pm

Oh, girl. You have a lot going on. Hang in there.

Yes. Get the hedgie. They are so freaking cute! I would love one of my own, but Mr PugRunner has “put his foot down” about more animals. We’ll see about that LOL!

Little man has awful seasonal allergies that present with a nasty cough. Obviously, his aren’t contagious, but it sounds absolutely awful and I always feel so judged when we go out and about. Unfortunately, he is really sensitive to a lot of environmental allergens, and it’s just going to be what it’s going to be ๐Ÿ™ I hope your daughter and husband feel better soon and that whatever it is doesn’t spread.

I’m glad the tri let you go off earlier!

  25. Teresa says

    May 23, 2017 at 7:30 pm

Girl just reading all that you have to do wears me out! I promise, it gets so much easier once they are in high school…..because they really don’t want their parents at the school ๐Ÿ™‚

Hope everyone is well and the next couple of weeks are much more relaxed. See you in Utah!!
