Planes, Trains, Automobiles and a Marathon

October 14, 2019

First off CONGRATULATIONS CHICAGO MARATHONERS! This week was about so much more than my workouts, so I’m going to skip the daily play-by-play because, let’s be real: Who cares? I worked out, it got done, end of story. It was a whirlwind week to say the least. In true Chiberian fashion, we went from 80 degrees to frost. Between heading to Atlanta for Family Weekend (which was a freaking blast, BTW), then Thing 1 heading home for fall break the following weekend, and Thing 2 flying out to Washington DC, this family was all over the place. Top all of that with the Chicago Marathon.

I’ve been shooting lots of workout videos in preparation for ZOOMA’s upcoming Winter Warrior Challenge. Registration isn’t open quite yet, but let me just say right now, it’s going to be a fun one!

My strained trapezius muscle is mostly better and I tried some very light (75lbs) bench press. That felt ok but any heavier does not, so I’ll continue to take it slow and be careful.

All bench press aside, it is Squatober after all, and I’ve been spending plenty of quality time in the squat rack.

Chicago Marathon Expo

It was so great to see Renee, Hillary and Kim

On Friday I hopped on an early (6:25) train bound for the Chicago Marathon Expo, where I spent most of the day in the Now Foods booth. I had no idea how much fun this would be. It was so great to see so many running friends. What totally surprised me though was how many people who I didn’t know already knew me and stopped by to say hi. It was the perfect opportunity to talk all-running-all-the-time and hear people’s running stories, their hopes for the race, their running dreams, all of it. It was an exhausting day but I loved it so much!

I also had a chance, for the very first time since finishing London in April, to officially see my name on the Abbott World Marathon Majors 6 Star Finisher Wall of Fame. Part of me felt like my name wouldn’t actually be there but nope, there it was. It’s still surreal to have achieved that goal.

Chicago Marathon

Me, Renee and Wendy

It was another early train-into-the-city kind of day. Due to mechanical problems, my train ended up pulling into Union Station 15 minutes late but I got to Monroe St. just in time to see the elites pass. Wendy and I cheered until about noon and Renee and Lindsay stopped by as well. We weren’t terribly successful in spotting all of the runners we were tracking this year but we did manage to spy Kim.

Loving

Special edition Chicago Marathon socks from Balega. Even better? A dollar from the purchase of each pair goes to their Lesedi Project I told you about here.

Self-care. I got all of my annual medical obligations out of the way including annual physical, thyroid specialist, and mammogram. Go me.

Not Loving.

I heard back from my new thyroid doc that my anti-thyroid antibodies are off-the-chart high, which is a bad thing. This is my biggest frustration with mainstream medicine. So often diseases are treated with medication while the underlying cause is ignored. Case in point: My thyroid function is great because I am taking medication, however until now, no attention has been paid to why my ATAs are so high in the first place.

Congratulations Chicago Marathoners! How was your week? Is it full-on fall where you are? Winter?

I’m linking up with Kim and Zenaida for Tuesday Topics.

Busy busy busy! Isn’t it crazy how it’s every bit as busy (or even more so) with one less offspring under your roof? Bummer to hear your still having thyroid issues…. hope you get some answers.

It must have been so cool to see your name on the Majors 6 Star Finisher Wall of Fame. I got chills reading about it just now! I was so happy I was able to see you at the Expo. I was nervous I would miss you since I was running late 🙁 Loved seeing you and Wendy at mile 13 yesterday – thanks for the hugs 🙂

How wonderful to find your name on the Wall of Fame and also I’ve discovered you’ll have been cheering on one of our runners from my club, Philip Liburd, who had a super time. So if you spoke to someone from Birmingham at your booth, it was probably him! Sorry about the thyroid issues and hope they resolve that. I know I’m missing an antibody in mine but they run thyroid tests in my normal bloods every year and nothing so far …

You sure have been busy! But what a fun way to spend the weekend. Thats so awesome that you got to see your name on the Wall of Fame! We have had fall weather for the past week or so. Hoping it sticks around for a bit!

So glad to have spent the morning with you at the Marathon! Even though we missed just about everyone–was the tracker messed up–it was so much fun to catch up!

Crazy about the thyroid. I wonder why they don’t try to figure out what’s going on? I guess they just throw thyroid hormone at it and hope that’s good enough. Why don’t they treat it like an autoimmune disease? Just curious.

Yay on seeing your name! I bet it really drives home what an amazing achievement it is. Sorry about the thyroid issues, aren’t antibodies a hallmark of Hashimotos?

How cool to see your name on the marathon majors wall! Hard earned indeed. Working at a big expo can be so much fun and exhausting. Looks like you all had so much fun spectating together. How fun to see so many friends.

Spotting the runners in that madness has to be tough! Our race was small, and so it was somewhat easy — we also spotted a lot of friends who were running that we didn’t know were running it.

I am sorry about the thyroid. I’d dearly love to see an integrative dr, even though I don’t really have issues, but there aren’t many here & I haven’t been able to get any recommendations.

We enjoyed a spectacular weekend, actually — first time in a really long time!

How awesome to see your name on the Wall of Fame! Isn’t working a huge expo like that so much fun?! (I loved working Boston’s this year)

I’m bummed I missed seeing you this weekend – guess it’s time to plan another Chicago adventure 😉

How frustrating about your thyroid – I hope your doc’s got a course of treatment for you to help get things back on track soon!

Congrats on getting (and seeing) your name on the Abbott World Marathon Majors 6-Star Finisher Wall of Fame. I’ve never worked at a race expo, but I bet it would be a lot of fun, especially with getting to see so many runner, blogger, and IG friends.

How fun that you got to hang out with Wendy, Renee, and Lindsay during the race!

I was so annoyed with the tracker! I missed my friend a couple of times but glad I finally saw her. I also missed KIm and saw her towards the end. Spectating is hard work!! 🙂

Love, love the socks. Please tell me I can get a pair somewhere.

How awesome that you got to see your name on the Wall of Fame!!!

Thank you for linking up with us and I am so sorry it has taken me this long to read your post.

    I love the Chicago socks
So awesome to see your name on the wall & glad you got to meet up with some.

marciashealthyslice I'm a working mom who, as part of a mid-life challenge, decided to run a marathon for kicks. I didn't plan on it becoming a hobby, but it did. I qualified for Boston at my second marathon and finished the 6 World Marathon Majors in London in 2019. Set no small goals. You never know what you're capable of until you try!
