Old Man Winter Redux

January 12, 2020

Just when you think we might have a mild winter, old man winter pays a visit. After an unseasonably mild week, we ended it with a “complex winter storm”, which had us mostly hunkering down at home. Here’s how the week in workouts went.

Monday: Rest
Tuesday: Trail Run 4 miles
Wednesday: Yoga
Thursday: Run 3 miles
Friday: Strength, balance, mobility
Saturday: Yoga
Sunday: Heavy Strength, Stepmill Tabata

Our weather was mild and gorgeous…until it wasn’t

Running was on the way down low this week. The hamstring issue at the insertion point at the back of my knee flared up after Tuesday’s run. That’s my signal that my pelvis needs to be realigned by Dr. Miracle. I forgot about it and ran again Thursday but then it REALLY didn’t feel good so I’m going to chill awhile on the running, which is actually a good thing for my AIP protocol. Besides a highly restricted diet, AIP is all about sleep, relaxation and moderate exercise.

Not a great pic but these fish tacos were amazing…and yes I made the Turmeric Tortillas!

It was my first full week of a strict AIP diet (see what I ate here) so shopping, prepping, cooking and figuring out what I could eat pretty much consumed every waking moment. Ironically we had events every single evening so I either had an early dinner at home or on one occasion, missed dinner completely. I had lots of practice staying away from party food and post-event/reception refreshments. Overall it was a great first week. I’m feeling amazing and even the Caveman noticed my complexion is smoother and more luminous. Good food and no sugar/junk will do that I guess. I made some fish tacos that were so incredible, I totally forgot about our usual pizza night. Who am I?

Warming up before the concert. No pics/videos of the performance were allowed.

Thing 2 had her winter concert where she debuted her new solo. She sparkled. When she was introduced, they named off all of her accomplishments just from the past six months. It’s been one helluva whirlwind. It hasn’t been all sweetness and light though. She’s 14. She went through burnout last fall. She takes musical projects on and off her plate. There have been entire weeks she did not pick up her flute. I mostly keep my mouth shut (except for support) and ride the waves, because as a parent I can only say so much. We still have to figure out her summer plans. There’s a possibility that both of our kids will be abroad this summer: One on tour with an orchestra and one studying.

Loving

No-Spend January. I sort of love this idea, especially after the holiday spending spree. I’m not going to be making any non-essential purchases for myself this month. We’ll see how that goes.

Holiday Sweat Challenge goodies from Fit Approach. The Holiday Sweat Challenge was a ton of fun. Having this prize box of goodies show up was awesome. So much goodness!

Not Loving

We went to Thing 2’s high school orientation last week. Wasn’t I just sitting in this very same auditorium with Thing 1 like yesterday? I don’t need to tell you how quickly high school goes. Sigh.

I’ll leave you with a gorgeous sunrise.

How was your week? Has winter reared its snowy head where you are? Are you up for No-Spend January?

Oooh would you share the fish taco recipe? It looks seriously yummy. Props for sticking to AIP when your schedule is so up in the air.

We had this crazy mini snow event in between 2 very warm weekends. It’s in the mid 60’s today just nutty but I will take it! Time does go by way too fast with the kids. My baby is going back to school today after a month off. It’s always hard to send them back

We had terrible wind yesterday but it’s stayed quite mild, which I’ll be happy for it to do, to be honest!

It sleeted, it rained, it snowed a bit, it warmed up big time. Another storm might roll in next week, but of course that’s far too soon to tell.

Congrats to Thing 2? Wow, abroad? Now that is something I definitely did not do at her age. I was more steady with my practicing, but she’s still quite young, I’m sure she’ll find her “rhythm”.

Congrats on sticking it through your first week with AIP!

Those fish tacos look amazing. Good for you for making your own tortillas! Congrats to Thing 2. Yep, the years go by so quickly. Enjoy your youngest’s high school years!

I’m been loving all the meals that you have made this week. Thanks so much for sharing with us – it has given me ideas for some new recipes and foods I wanna try!

I’m also doing a no spend January – so far so good and my wallet is thanking me, especially after holiday spending, LOL

I hope that the hamstring issue feels better soon.

That sunrise is unbelievable! Love it.

No-spend January- what a challenge! I thought dry January was hard enough 🙂

No spend January? I have indulged in a few things–the amazing Sherpa throw that I gave to Tom for Christmas was too hard for me to forget, so I bought one for myself. I’m trying to be good!

Funny we attended my youngest son’s high school orientation this past week too and I spent the whole time thinking “how are we here already!?”

The weather here has been crazy – it was in the 60s yesterday and 70 today…this is New England?!

I was all aboard the No-Spend January…and then a couple of races came a-knocking LOL I still haven’t registered, but I plan to in the next few days. Way to go on that first week of your new diet! And, a huge congrats the the daughter and all her musical success 🙂

That sunrise! So pretty! That’s one good thing about winter – the sunrises and sunsets seem to be dialed up 10 notches. Your winter weather should be our way soon. We just had the most amazing weather weekend – 60 degrees in January is so weird. As much as I want winter to stick around, the sunshine felt amazing.

Our weather has been all over the place this week. It sounds like a good time for you to back off the running, but hopefully you can get yourself aligned to avoid any injuries!

I studied abroad. Best decision ever.

We’ve had crazy weather. Winter spring now back to winter. Never know what to pack when I travel.

You survived week 1 on that diet. Kudus to you.

I don’t think I will survive a no spend month. Kudos to you for doing it. Looks like the AIP diet is coming along. I have been seeing your food on social medial and everything looks pretty good.

Staying away from party food is the hardest thing for me! Before I go, I’m always determined to stick to healthy snacks and then at some point I cave in. I have great admiration for people who can resist! Well done!

I have already failed No Spend January, so I may push it to February as I love the concept. Yay on early results with AIP and congrats to your “kids” on possibly both being abroad – what great accomplishments especially at Thing2’s age

Ironically, I have spent almost nothing in months because…. I can’t drive myself to target! Sure, we are paying for medical expenses, but that’s different lol.

Winter is over for the week. It will be in the 80s for the next few days. Meh.

Studying abroad is such a phenomenal experience. I can’t wait to hear what gets decided!

You must have felt so proud about Thing 2! All those accomplishments and at age 14 too. It’s tough being a parent. My daughter is really good at tennis but there have been periods when she has gone “off” for a few weeks and I’ve had to find that balance of just being supportive but also trying to get her back without making it something she hates.

Best of luck with Dr Miracle xx

No spend January is such a good idea!! I’ve already broken that haha! We dud have about 30 minutes of snowfall here in Dallas over the weekend, haha but now its back to 60 degrees!

I’m really curious about the tumeric tortillas!!

Once kids are in high school the time really flies by. It’s kind of incredible!

We have no real winter here. It’s mild. Sometimes windy and a bit of rain but I really can’t complain! Not doing a no-spend january (because of the hubs’ birthday) but the next few months we’ll be strict with extra money. Just found out that we have to pay an additional EUR 1,600– to our housing association for upcoming work in the building. Like we have THAT just laying around…
