Adjusting My Sails as We Head Toward Thanksgiving

November 21, 2021

Can you believe we’re heading into Thanksgiving week? I can’t either. Ready or not here we come. You’ll notice the week in workouts was a disjointed one with some required rest right in the middle.

Monday: Walk 4 miles, Trail Run 4 miles, Upper Body Strength + Bike Tabata
Tuesday: Walk 4 miles, Trail run 5 miles, Lower Body Strength & Balance
Wednesday: Walk 2 miles, otherwise rest (oral surgery)
Thursday: Walk 2 miles otherwise rest
Friday: Walk 4 miles, COVID booster vax
Saturday: Walk 4 miles, light strength + yoga workouts
Sunday: Walk 4 miles, TBD

So yeah I finally had that oral surgery for the infected old root canal I’ve been wrestling with for way too long. First my dentist referred me to two endodontists that were not on my insurance plan. Then there was a crazy long wait, while I kept pain at bay with antibiotics. I finally found an endodontist in my plan, who turned out to be a total crackpot. I could not run out of there fast enough. At last I found one I love. It was a longer drive than I wanted, but desperate times call for desperate measures. I can finally say the surgery is done and I am healing. Overall the surgery site was sore but not terribly painful, so I was happy to skip the pain meds completely.

The day before my surgery I went a little nuts and crammed in all kinds of workouts, because I knew I wouldn’t be able to get my blood pressure up for awhile so things could clot and heal. The stitches won’t be removed until after Thanksgiving but what can you do.

I got my COVID Vaccine booster. Other than a bit of soreness at the injection site, I had no symptoms.

The Incredible Shrinking Thanksgiving

I knocked out the majority of my Thanksgiving grocery shopping this week only to learn of more cancellations. I’m doing my best to not judge and go with the flow, but I’d be lying if I said I was not disappointed.

High School Musical

Thing 2 got a spot in the orchestra pit for this fall’s school musical. She’s been SO dedicated to weeks upon weeks of practices and rehearsals (5 hours every day anyone?) This weekend it was showtime and even though I couldn’t really see her in the dark and shrouded pit, I am so very proud of all of her hard work.

Cookbook Culling Project

I pressed the express button and donated a bunch of my cookbooks without making anything from them like I said I would. I just don’t have that kind of time with Thanksgiving bearing down on me (and I needed to get them out of the dining room). I am 80% through my 8-ft stack and the finish line is in sight! I am struggling with letting go of cookbooks that were signed by the author. Ugh!

New On YouTube

Lower Body Strength & Balance Workout. I coach lots of women in the 40+ age range and it is not uncommon for too many of them to trip, fall and injure themselves. This workout trains your balance as well as strengthens the lower body. No equipment required!

Runfession Friday Linkup

We’ve got a special Black Friday visit to the Runfessional on tap. Join me!

How was your week? What are your Thanksgiving plans? Do you consistently work on your balance?

I’m linking up with Kim and Deborah for the Weekly Run Down. Join us!

I’m glad to hear you are healing well after your surgery. I’ve had my share of oral surgery and it’s not fun! Sorry about Thanksgiving–sometimes small intimate gatherings are the best, IMHO. Congrats to Jillian!

I have the 15-pound Sir Tom defrosting in the fridge, but that’s it at the moment for my Thanksgiving plans. Our guest just is wavering a bit as well, so it might be an interesting day. The Trot, though, is a big GO this year, so that’s all good. I do (almost) daily leg lifts, which have really improved my balance, but I know I should be upping that work. I hope your recovery continues to go well 🙂

I’m so glad you were able to sense and escape the crackpot endodontist and get your surgery done. Huge congrats to Thing 2. 5 hours a day — wow!

We are having a small Thanksgiving gathering but with the added thrill of taking my Mom and Scooby for an overnight at my son’s! That means no Black Friday store shopping for me, but I’ll be at the runfessional.

I am very glad you “survived” the dentist.
Congrats to your daughter who is working very hard.
Of course no Thanksgiving here in Italy but Black Friday shopping is compulsive everywhere.

I definitely do work on balance a lot! It’s so important. Going to my mom for Thanksgiving.

Congrats to Thing 2. I played in one of the HS musicals (so many years ago), which also working part time, and taking some courses at a community college. Good thing I could drive! It was crazy but fun and I did have a few soloes, actually.

I have to admit I wasn’t real pleased to be around so many travelers but sometimes you just need faith.

Glad you’ve got that oral surgery behind you. I hope your recovery is a smooth one.

Congrats to your daughter – such dedication to practicing!

Thanksgiving will be a small affair for us and I’m grateful that my brother is taking on the hosting duties.

Well done on the surgery and your sensible attitude to your recovery. It will be so good to be rid of the infection, too! And I have trouble getting rid of signed-to-me books, I do sometimes cross it out or tear out that page, even, as it just feels like the author will automatically find it!

Well, good you got that over with! Oral surgery is not fun.
I definitely know the time commitment involved with those high school musicals. My favorite is when they don’t drive yet, so it’s actually also a time commitment on your part, to get them there and back.
It’s just going to be the four of us for Thanksgiving, but we’re still doing a lot of cooking! It’s definitely a lot less pressure, not having a lot of people over.

Good news about your tooth and the booster. I had no symptoms either. I hope everyone gets theirs.

No cooking for me…take out at my MILs.

Ha, I sense there must be a good story with the crackpot endodontist! The mind boggles.

5 hours a day – that’s incredible. Especially as these hours are done on top of regular school work. I’m sure Thing 2 is heading for an incredibly successful musical career.

Did she inherit her musical talent from you? Or are you generally a musical family?

Glad the surgery is behind you and you found a doctor you liked! Good luck with Thanksgiving. Ours will be lowkey with my sister and fam who lives in the suburbs of Minneapolis. Have a wonderful holiday Marcia!

Glad to hear that you were able to get the oral surgery done before the holiday. That’s too bad about the crackpot dentist – thankfully you were able to avoid that! I’m hoping to get my booster this week if there are any spots open.
Hope you have an amazing Thanksgiving!

Ugh. I hope your recovery is going well. Oral surgery is just awful (I hate all things teeth and mouth related). I’m glad you got everything taken care of, though.

Boo on thanksgiving cancellations. So frustrating especially when you’ve planned/shopped for them. Glad you finally found an endodontist and are healing well. HUGS my friend

Oral surgery for an infected root canal? Ouch! Glad you got it taken care of and you are on the mend. Happy Thanksgiving!
