Weekly Rundown: College Drop-Off Edition

August 18, 2024

Like it or not, college drop-off time is here. I’ve been teary-eyed about it for some time now. By the time you read this, we’ll be on our way to Blacksburg to move Thing 2 into her Freshman dorm. Before I get into that, here’s how the week in workouts went:

Sunday: 10-mile hike around Lake Geneva
Monday: Walk 4 miles, Strength
Tuesday: Walk 4 miles, 30 mins. bike hills and sprints
Wednesday: Walk 4 miles, Run 4 miles + Core
Thursday: Walk 2 miles (rainy) otherwise rest
Friday: Walk 4 miles otherwise rest (well very early work)
Saturday: Walk 4 miles, Strength, Core, Sauna

Weekly Rundown: College Drop-Off Edition

My workouts have kept the anxiety at bay during this stressful time. Just keep running.

It was a week filled with good-byes as Thing 2 bid farewell to extended family and school friends. There were send-off parties, get-togethers, lots of hugs and yes, tears. There’s been lots of packing, as well as stuff already shipped off to campus, courtesy of good old Amazon. Once all the dust settles, an empty nest awaits.

Incredible gardens along the Lakefront path.

We enjoyed our last weekend together in Lake Geneva. Thing 2 joined us for our annual hike along the lakefront path. Check out our Lake Geneva highlights here. The weather could not have been more perfect.

Thing 2 asked how I’m feeling about the impending empty nest. The truth is I’m neutral. I’m neither looking forward to it, nor mourning it. It’s a new chapter and a privilege really, to provide education to your kids. Of course it’s hard not to be wistful and melancholy about how quickly they’ve grown and flown. Wasn’t I just dropping her off at preschool?

So I’ll do my best to make it through this “drop-off” week, and let summer fade to fall.

Runfession Friday Linkup

I’m going to give you a heads-up now because who knows what this week will bring? Join me right here, not THIS Friday but Friday, August 30, for the Runfession Friday Linkup.

How was your week? Are you an empty nester? Are you sad to see summer slip away or are you looking forward to fall?

I’m linking up with Kim and Deborah for the Weekly Run Down. Join us!

I can understand how bitter-sweet it must feel about having an empty nest. But at the same time, this new stage in life opens up great opportunities (travel!).

Lake Geneva looks amazing! So nice that you could spend some time there together. 10 miles is a long hike!

Been there, done that, and yep, it’s a really tough time. Like everything, you’ll adjust. But allow yourself time to grieve. And be proud of what an amazing young woman you’ve raised!!!

College drop off always got me teary eyed! It’s our job to get them ready to go off but oof it is so hard to watch them fly off. I kind of miss the back to school days! It took me a while to adjust to the whole empty nest thing. But they do still come home a lot while in school so it helps with the transition. Good luck!

I’ve been thinking about you, and several other friends who have kids starting college now. I know you’ve already been through it- but it’s SO HARD! I still get sad every time I leave my son at school, but it’s never as hard as the first time.
I’ll be very interested to hear your thoughts on the empty nest- I’ll be there in three years, and I know how fast these years will go.
    GOOD LUCK WITH EVERYTHING.

I was pretty bummed when we dropped off my son, but going to his lacrosse games softened the blow, and I got used to my quiet house sooner than I expected!

College drop-off is tough! It got easier with each kid, thankfully. I hope all goes well for you as you adjust to this new phase of life as parents. You probably know I dread summer ending. It’s going to happen regardless, so I do my best to appreciate the here and now.

Hugs. You have had a lot of changes this year, so be gentle with yourself. I hope move in day went well.

We have two more years. I will be sad, but I also am so excited for him to have experiences in the next chapter of his life. Of course, after his accident last week, part of me feels like I”m never going to let him go anywhere. LOL

Aww, thinking about you! It must be so hard this time of year. You seem to have a very strong relationship with your kids, that’s incredible!

I hope college drop off went well and that your daughter has a fantastic year. You certainly got treated to fabulous weather. We drove past Blacksburg on Tuesday on our way home from the farm – the weather has been beautiful all across the commonwealth all week.

Hope you are settling in to the new normal. Having a quiet house is so odd! Our house will be empty after Friday when our daughter moves back to college. I will be finding lots of things to keep my busy!

It’s been awhile for me. Like you said it’s inevitable. A new chapter for all.

Take advantage of your free time.

I spent most of the week teary-eyed too…how did we get to the college years so fast?!

I hope your daughter has a great year! Sending you lots of hugs!
