Almost-Solstice Fun

June 19, 2014

I’d like to thank the Academy. Remember just the other day I was whining about how our community garden is overflowing with newcomers this year and they’ve really raised the bar and I’m envious of their technicolor trellises, engraved garden stones, robotic scarecrows, etc. while I struggle to make a dent in the weeds in mine? Yeah well at the homeowner’s association meeting last night (which I did not attend because it’s Modern Family night, no because I’m single parenting, yeah that’s it, single parenting) apparently some garden awards were given out. I got a text from a neighbor that went like this:

Neighbor: Bill is passing out awards for the garden and you got “Hardest working”. I’ll stop by and drop off your trophy.
Me: Shut up he is not.
Neighbor: Yep.
Me: No way.
Neighbor: texts pic of award.
gardentrophy
Me: Ok that’s nuts. My garden looks like hell.
Moral of the story? Stop coveting your neighbor’s trellis and keep your nose in the dirt….or something like that.

This is cool. How’s this for a fun way to celebrate the solstice? On June 21st, two teams of ASICS trail runners will be working in relay to run 162 kilometers through 3 countries before the sun goes down—giving them 15 hours and 41 minutes to complete the route.

Speaking of cool…I’ve been meaning to tell you what’s in the June POPSUGAR Must Have Box:

junepopsugar

  • Emily Giffin’s The One and Only. A great beach or poolside read. That’s where I’m reading it anyway.
  • One Potato Two Potato Hawaiian BBQ Chips. Sassy and delicious. I want to tell you I shared them, but I wiped them out all by myself.
  • Sachajuan Shiny Citrus Body Lotion. A fresh, light scent I really love, especially after a day at the beach.
  • Turkish-T Beach Towel. A beach towel by day and a chic wrap by night. Um, ok, Thing 2 and I used it as a picnic blanket this week. Maybe not so glam but lots of fun.
  • You Smell Lemon Wet Wipes. Great smelling antibacterial wipes.
  • Lollies hair ties. These are bright and cute and made from swimwear fabric. Can one ever have too many hair ties?
  • Native Union $15 gift card. I am not familiar with this brand but apparently they specialize in techie gadgetry.

Use code JUNESELECT10 to save $10 off a 3-month POPSUGAR Must Have Box subscription. But hurry–offer ends 6/30.

POPSUGAR provided me with a complimentary POPSUGAR Must Have box. The opinions I have shared about the box are my own and POPSUGAR did not tell me what to say or how to say it.

How will you celebrate the solstice? Have you harvested anything from the garden yet? Other than weeds? Anyone racing this weekend?

There you go – you’re a green-fingered super star. And you have the trophy to prove it.

After seeing the Emily Giffin book in everyone’s boxes, I put it on hold at the library. I’m hoping to get Kindle version before we go to Colorado. Not really beach reading but mountains are just as relaxing. Right?

I could have used the wipes, too. After teaching two classes last night, my husband declared that I smelled badly.

They’re probably paying professionals to do their landscaping…that’s why it looks so fancy!

How nice that your neighbors recognize your hard work. That must be a good feeling.

I’ve been wanting to check out the Pop Sugar box. I might just break down and sign up this weekend.

Well congrats, Miss Green Thumb! too funny. We have tomatoes on our deck in a pot, and a blueberry bush. But that’s it b/c our yard is too shady for a garden. : (

I hven’t harvested anything yet, but it’s too hot where I live for the cool weather crops that come in early (like radishes, etc). Looks like I have a few chile’s and a jalapeno that are about good to go though. yay
