My Year in Running

December 11, 2015

Today’s Friday Five topic is Running Wish List. Honestly beyond finishing the marathon majors, my only wishes are to stay healthy, injury free and that everyone could enjoy the endorphins and experiences running brings.Β Since my racing year is over, I thought I’d recap the year’s top 5 running-related experiences instead.

Year in Running 2015

In 2015 I didn’t race as much as I have in the past. Probably due to focusing on learning to swim.
1 Full marathon
1 Half marathon
1 10 miler
1 Nautical 10 miler (11.5ish miles)
1 Sprint tri
2 Super Sprint tris (Overall female 2)
1 10k (AG3)
3 5k (AG1)

turkey trot 2016 finisher

5. Going sub-8 at the turkey trot this year. After years of struggle and not feeling so great, I’m not totally there yet, but I’m finally, maybe, possibly getting my sluggish thyroid under control, losing weight and running is getting better!

RnR Vegas sign

4. Rock n Roll Vegas and the remix. I worried about how I’d handle a night race but this weekend was all kinds of crazy fun.

Atop the podium at the Olympic Stadium in Athens, Greece.

3. Running all over Europe. When we lived there I was not the runner I am today so I stuck mostly to the mill. Being able to return and run in so many beautiful countries was a bucket list filler for sure.

Twin Cities finish

2. Running the Twin Cities Marathon with my BRF’s.This blogging thing has given me a fantastic social running network and some of my dearest friends. For that I am eternally grateful.

EDS finish1. Learning to swim well enough to finish my first triathlons. This was way out of this water-phobic dog paddler’s comfy zone. I’m still no Diana Nyad but I never gave up and I’ll be back tri-ing next year.

Another year of #running adventure is almost done! How’d your 2015 go? #runchat

You’re a rock star, Marcia! You have accomplished so much this year!! In 2015, I ran one 10 mile race. That’s it as far as racing. I will run a half on Sunday. I took a break from running for part of 2015 but during that time I saw some great gains in my lifting!

I have started going to the pool for the past couple years and really enjoy it. But swimming in open water ? with other people around me trying to get ahead ? Ugh, scary. Wishing you a great 2016 !

Great year! I love when people wrap up their accomplishments for the year. I found that I had forgotten or minimized some of my accomplishments – when I wrote them all down in one spot I was actually really proud of myself!

Sounds like you had a great year! For not running as much it still looks like you had a lot going on! And learning to swim plus getting your sub 8 miler are both big accomplishments. I’ve got the swimming part down, now I need to his that sub 8 πŸ˜‰ Way to go girl, can’t wait to see what you do next year!

You really did have an awesome year. Such great pictures, too!

So today I realized that in 2015 I’ve done a grand total of two running races. One in January, and one today. And the January one wasn’t even an official race. One of my goals for the next year is to do more regular training, and that’s going to include running, so I imagine that number will go up a bit!

A wonderful year Marcia! I’m so impressed with your sub 8! We keep saying we are going to Scotland and of course I’d want that to coincide with a half marathon. Do you have any advice for me on conservatively (and sanely) fast-tracking for the Disney Marathon in 4 weeks? One school of thought is to just run a little (I’m up to 6 miles–whoo hoo) and just stay healthy and WING it.

    December 13, 2015 at 4:24 pm

Wow what a year! You are so inspiring Marcia. I have to go over some of your swimming posts because that’s something I’ve been working on too! I love water but I am not good at doing laps. I need all the help I can get!

marciashealthyslice I'm a working mom who, as part of a mid-life challenge, decided to run a marathon for kicks. I didn't plan on it becoming a hobby, but it did. I qualified for Boston at my second marathon and finished the 6 World Marathon Majors in London in 2019. Set no small goals. You never know what you're capable of until you try!
