Marcia’s Most Fascinating People of 2009

December 29, 2009

Sorry Barbara Walters, I’m totally lifting your idea but don’t worry I won’t steal any of your picks! Here are some of the people I found to be most fascinating this year:

5. Race Volunteers! My hat is off to those of you who spend countless hours on the sidelines at races, roasting/freezing your petunias off in order to keep us racers up and running. In the throes of agony or  not, I am always so grateful for the many volunteers that line a racecourse. Without you there would be no race!

4. The Blogosphere. I’m coming close to finishing up my first year in bloggyland and I have to say I find it more fascinating every day. I’ve gotten to know so many wonderful people doing amazing things, challenging themselves, defying the odds. I’ve laughed, cried, shared your joys and frustrations and celebrated your victories. I am beyond grateful to those of you who have done the same with me. I am excited to see what 2010 holds for all of us!

3. Dr. Robert Scott. The Sports Chiro (ARTist) who worked his magic on my angry hammy/piriformis right before Boston and had me up and running pain-free on the big day! I had never been to a Sports Chiro before but I’m a true believer now. An intensive regimen of adjustment/massage/ heat/ice/electrical stimulation and kinesiotape did the trick! Thank you for making my day in Beantown possible! Plus the fact that he was fully conversant about all of the Disney Princesses and let Thing 2 feed the fish in the waiting room aquarium every day were added bonuses!

2. Meb! What a year! What a win! And such a great guy! So happy to see him break the tape in Central Park this year. Watch out world, American running is back in a big way.

1. Team Hoyt–-This dynamic and super-inspiring duo has plucked at my heartstrings over the years on those Ironman documentaries that always make me cry when I see so many come so far.
I had the honor of running with Team Hoyt for a bit at this year’s Boston Marathon. I could not believe my eyes when I saw them. Of course I was fanning away tears. To me they personify the strength of the human spirit by overcoming adversity with tenacity, grit and grace.

Love this blog post! I would have been a puddle of tears had I been running with Team Hoyt as well. I'm blubbering by the end of the Ironman documentaries every time. The first time I saw info about Team Hoyt was through an email video link at work. As I was red-eyed & sniffling behind my cubicle after seeing it, I promptly sent it to my coworkers so they could see their incredible story of love, courage and triumph!

What a neat post! And you're so right, race volunteers don't get enough credit! One day I am going to have to sit on the side lines and volunteer to give back! I can't wait for 2010 either – bloggyland makes it so much more exciting! Happy Tuesday!

I am always so amazed at the awesome volunteers. I do not volunteer nearly enough because I'm addicted to racing, but I will be helping with a race on 1-1-10.

Wow! That is so cool that you were running close by Team Hoyt! I cry every time I watch anything about them. Amazing!!

    Great list!

marciashealthyslice I'm a working mom who, as part of a mid-life challenge, decided to run a marathon for kicks. I didn't plan on it becoming a hobby, but it did. I qualified for Boston at my second marathon and finished the 6 World Marathon Majors in London in 2019. Set no small goals. You never know what you're capable of until you try!
