Training Recap

January 25, 2010

Geez are Mondays coming faster than ever before? I feel like I’m doing one of these recaps everytime I turn around lately!
Boston Training Week #4 is Complete! 41 miles

Here’s how it went:
Monday: SRD

Tuesday: Speedwork (5x1000m) and yoga.

Wednesday: 10 miles and weights

Thursday: 1/2 hour Kettleworx DVDs

Friday: 7 miles, with 10k of that at race pace for the virtual 10k

Saturday: Yoga. Is it just me or is yoga getting harder? This was so hard, my skin still hurts. But it wasn’t quite as hard as jockeying/jousting/eye poking, etc. for position at the front desk for a pass to get in to the damn class. I think admission to Harvard would have been easier. What’s up with that?

Sunday: 18 miles. My first 20-miler of the cycle was on tap for today but I woke to pouring rain and strong wind. After pacing like a caged chinchilla for almost 3 hours in hopes it would subside, my window of opportunity for a workout of any kind quickly closing, I resigned myself to a nasty treadmill sentence: how does one bang out uber miles on a mill without needing to be committed to the looney bin?
Here’s how I did it today:
5 miles running
10 minute cardio Kettleworx DVD
5 more miles running
10 more minutes Kettleworx DVD
5 more miles and a change of shoes because I was certain the actuators on my Newtons had somehow worked themselves up and into the soles of my feet. Geez.
Do you detect a pattern developing here? You guessed it:
10 more minutes Kettleworx after which time my legs were obliterated to put it mildly.
Cooldown and stretching because I absolutely, positively, could not, would not fathom another 5 steps let alone 5 miles on that hamster wheel.
15 miles running + 30 minutes cardio kettle bell workout = ooohh let’s call it 18 miles and call it a day. Since it’s my training plan and my blog, 18 miles it is.

I like how you alternated the long treadmill workout! I would have done the exact same thing ๐Ÿ™‚ That is a great idea!

15 miles on the hampster wheel is incredible. well done.

Yeah, I can't even imagine 5 straight miles on the mill. Three is hard for me. It is nice that you have the option when it's crappy outside. ๐Ÿ™‚ Good job getting it done.

A long run on the dreadmill is horrid – great job on mixing it up and getting it done! You had a great week! Happy Monday!

Hey there! Quick Q for ya… do you find that 100m speedwork is helpful for you? Do you increase the distance at all? Maybe some Yasso 800's? Just curious. Trying to find other speedwork workouts– the yassos are getting tired.

Great job! 15 on the treadmill even broken up is hardcore! Sounds like you had a great week!

Wow…that much on the treadmill is crazy! But awesome job for getting that done!

Way to make treadmill running for that distance bearable. Good job on the workout and for the whole week, you rock!

You did it! That's totally 18 miles ๐Ÿ™‚
I am finding yoga pretty darn tough myself…especially when she tells us to "hold that position" and then proceeds to go around and place people and talk…and seems to forget we're "holding that same ?%$$ pose" …ah I'm just complaining, but I don't mind the workout ๐Ÿ™‚

nice job on that workout with the treadmill. If that is what you must do, it is amazing how you can make it bearable. Best wishes on your training for Boston.

You're right! It *is* your blog (which is mighty pretty lately, by the way) and you have every right to claim 30 min of kettle bells as 3 extra miles! ๐Ÿ™‚

Wish I could do yoga but I get too pass-y out-y doing all the different poses. A friend of mine who teaches yoga said that I could modify the poses but I've never tried.

Seems like the training is going well. You are my hero!

    Nice treadmill workout!!!!

I'd be calling that 20 miles, not 18! That's one heck of a workout. I would not have been able to get back on the treadmill for one more step.

I've been thinking the same thing about yoga lately . . . aren't I supposed to be getting stronger?

That's right. Your training plan, you do what you want!

  15. Jill says

The extra 2 miles wouldn't have done anything at this point in training anyway so smart move to cut it short. I think yoga is just hard on my shoulders. Not sure why but ugh…
    Happy Monday!

15 on the treadmill is nuts. Great workout, and great idea mixing it up! Kettleball workouts are hard!
oh, and thanks for the comment. ๐Ÿ™‚

It does seem like you just posted a training week recap. Time is flying!

I decided to face my old enemy this week and do my tempo run on the dreadmill. It will be 5 miles total. I think I may fall off on purpose just for some action and entertainment. Yeesh.

Girl you've already been training for four weeks? You have a heavy work out schedule too, very tough! You'll definitely be ready for B!
Thanks for your sweet support BTW!

Yes-18 it is!!! I have 18 on my schedule this coming week and it is definitely not going to be nice enough outside to run. I don't know if I can handle the treadmill again for that long! Nice work on the workouts! I'm quite interested in this kettleball thing!

Way to rock out that 7k too. You came it right under your goal. nicely done!

great week! i love the treadmill/long run workout. it is *tough* to set up camp on that machine most of the time. do-able, but not necessarily enjoyable. i would definitely have rounded up the miles for the dvd workout part too!

I think it is cool that yoga is so popular, but not that the classes are so packed! Your Harvard comment totally cracked me up!
