One Last Week

April 12, 2010

One week from right now I’ll be riding the infamous bus to Hopkinton. Never in my wildest did I ever imagine I’d be doing that. Never. Funny how life works sometimes. Dare to dream.

I am distracted, disorganized, preoccupied, not getting around the blogosphere the way I should so I apologize for that. Since the onset of  BADD (Boston Attention deficit disorder), I’m having an extra hard time formulating coherent thoughts and an even harder time sticking to any one subject, especially if it doesn’t pertain in some way to um, the B word. Therefore I’ll resort to the trusty bullet format:

I’m back from my girls’ weekend in Florida! It was a great, relaxing time. Thanks to mapmyrun.com, I did my last pre-Boston long run in the quaint town of Celebration.

Lesson 1: The Stick is not an acceptable carry-on item. In an effort to save the ridiculous, I mean really baggage fee, I carried my bag on…or tried to anyway…and created a national security red alert. Sorry to all who were behind me in line. $50 in bail baggage fees later, I should have ditched the darn stick.

Lesson 2: Allow pllllennnty of time to negotiate your way through airport security, especially in Orlando…definitely if you’re smuggling contraband carrying The Stick. Let’s just say my running shoes came in handy getting to the gate post-stick incident.

Boston apparel status: Up in the air….still. I ran my last morsel of speedwork this morning, in a skirt I was considering and a top I wasn’t. Whether or not it was true, I obsessed that the skirt was too short/blowing up in the front, hiking up/sliding down in back, etc. I swear finding my wedding dress was less stressful. The top, on the other hand, performed nicely…hmmm. I did 6x400m intervals, too slow of course, what else is new?

Chia Seed Giveaway ending soon! If you haven’t entered already, what are you waiting for?

So, they let you take the stick? Did you end up having to check your bags? I'm heading out to San Diego and was planning on taking my stick with me…sounds like I need to make sure I can check it through…

Funny about the stick! I brought it on my vacation but no problems in a car other than inquiries about what it was!

OH MY GOD! BOSTON ONE WEEK!!! How awesome are you? you will be super cute no matter what you wear….I bet those guys had a funny conversation after you couldn't get through security!

That's so funny about the stick. My son just went to Disney for his senior trip. He stuffed an aerobed in his backpack for the hotel room, and caused a stir at security when they wanted to know who packed "the pump." Good thing he didn't bring THE STICK — he might've been detained!

Good luck in Boston… can't wait to read your race report. ๐Ÿ™‚

wow, it's coming up soon, btw, my cousin is running Boston too!!

Can't belive the stick caused probs…my husband tried to bring a small fan in his carryon on a flight to Ireland, talk about red alert!

Busted at security for The Stick?!?! That must have been a hassle, but it's sure worth the chuckle. ๐Ÿ™‚ Security guards must not have been runners.

    ONE WEEK! WOOHOO!

Not surprised they had issues with the stick – recently had a friend get in trouble for her son's plastic collapsible light saber.

So close now! You are going to do great!

We will now refer to this as The Stick incident. Sorry to hear all the trouble with that!
So excited for you! Focus on happy thoughts to get you through BADD!

Airline security is just ridiculous. At least they let us on with our coffee now. Remember what is was like when we couldn't take any liquids on board at all? It was like the terrorists had already won.

    Good luck next week!!!

First, good luck choosing the Boston outfit. I am sure it will be tasteful. Second, The Stick – really? Did they think you were going to massage the pilot to death…

Thanks for the warning about the stick. I'll store that away for sometime in the future when I might be inclined to take mine with me.

    GOOD LUCK NEXT MONDAY!

  27. Kenley says

    April 13, 2010 at 2:40 pm

The stick caused you that much problem. Will you be carrying it again on any departures? lol. I can only imagine what must be going through your head right now. I will be keeping you in my prayers as your big day comes. Best wishes.

  28. Laura says

    April 13, 2010 at 3:04 pm

Ahh I giggled when you said finding your wedding dress was easier! Hope you've settled on something you're happy wearing ๐Ÿ™‚

  29. April says

    April 13, 2010 at 3:20 pm

Too funny!! I'm sure it wasn't funny at the time though. Who would have thought the stick would be a security threat…really?

So glad you had a wonderful girls weekend!

I'm freaking out, but what's new?
I THOUGHT I had my Boston outfit picked out, but now the damn weather keeps changing! First it was sunny and in the 60's, now they are predicting rain and in the 50's! I don't want rain!!! Good luck with the outfit, I have no idea what I'm going to do ๐Ÿ™

Who would have thought they stick wouldn't cut it? Too bad. And I hate Orlando airport–missed a flight once b/c of those stupid long lines full of hyped up kids (mine included). Take a million outfits to Boston with you and make a game-day decision!

i love the BADD acronym. brilliant.

and good to know about the stick. seriously! sorry you had to go through all that.

and yah, up in tahoe now, i did think i was a jetsetter like you;-) but my cabin doesn't have internet…the horror! it's killin' me, but i get to visit a coffee shop for ~1 hr a day for service…

  33. Velma says

    April 13, 2010 at 5:20 pm

YEAAA! Good luck! I can never concentrate before a marathon – I am sure it is 100x worse before Boston

  34. Geri says

    April 13, 2010 at 5:46 pm

haha – I think I remember from last year's Boston report that you finally wore the outfit you had on when it was time to leave for the bus (after trying many combinations that morning). Very funny!

  35. Medievalist says

    April 13, 2010 at 6:39 pm

Yeah, I am just going to leave my stick at home and wait a few days to use it. Still haven't quite settled on my outfit either – waiting for the weather forecast to tighten up a little more. Good luck in the final days!

Good to know about the stick. I probably would not have thought twice about trying to carry it on. So true about the race outfit- especially for marathons. It absolutely is right up there with dress shopping. LOL

marciashealthyslice I'm a working mom who, as part of a mid-life challenge, decided to run a marathon for kicks. I didn't plan on it becoming a hobby, but it did. I qualified for Boston at my second marathon and finished the 6 World Marathon Majors in London in 2019. Set no small goals. You never know what you're capable of until you try!
