Questions I Get Questions…

April 27, 2010

First welcome new bloggy A-listers! It’s great to have you here!

Since running…um here’s that B-word again…Boston…you’ve inundated my inbox with questions. I love it!
Without further ado, some answers for those inquiring minds:

What was your fueling strategy for Boston?
Because my wave went off at 10:30 (late in marathon terms) I had time for not one but 2 breakfasts. That would be great on any other day of the year but when my tummy’s all ajitter with marathon nerves, eating anything at all was a challenge.
5:15am: mini bagel and PB, banana, Balance Bar, 4 oz coffee, water
8am: On the bus to Hopkinton another mini bagel (no PB though) banana, sips of Accelerade
I’d planned to take a Pineapple Roctane 10 mins prior to the start but forgot.

Mile 5: Pineapple Roctane w/water
Lemon Accelerade
Mile 10: Hammer Espresso gel w/water
Lemon Accelerade
Mile 15: Hammer Espresso gel w/water
Lemon Accelerade
Fuel belt ran dry, switched to Gatorade at the water stations
Mile 20: Power Gel/water (they were giving them out) no clue what flavor it was
Mile 22: Took 2 Watermelon Luna Moons as an amuse bouche. Not much amusement though.
More Gatorade/water.
At the finish: Banana, Gatorade, water, not sure what else. It’s all a blur.
There you have it! Remember what works for me may not work for you so experiment well before race day.

Did you indulge in an after-marathon treat?
I foraged through the standard-issue Boston Marathon feed bag later at the airport. But my real treat came the next day when I pulled out the stops and indulged in this badboy: Not all at one sitting but still…mmmm.

I’ll be back with more Q&A soon!
What’s your favorite post-race treat?

I love any kind of pastry or sweets after a race. Mmm.

Thanks for sharing! Would it be bad if I say I like ADP's cookie dough when I'm done running? Favorite is actually indulging in an apple covered in peanut butter. I eat enough sweets all the other days fo the week.

I really like ice cream and I think that makes a great post-race treat. Esp. when running in the summer!

Jill and I inhailed a doughnut at the finish! Hahaha!
And I think I may be switching to Hammer gels, Gu's have wronged me one too many times!

I'll probably have some sort of sweet, carby thing immediately after, but my favorite part is enjoying a special beer. Last time it was an Alaskan Smoked Porter. I need to start thinking about what I'll be having next time…

    Post-long runs and post-marathons: Blueberry pancakes!! Mmmmm…
Later day post-marathon: Cinnamon cake from the Corner Bakery.
Yikes, I'm getting hungry as I type!

I would have eaten the whole thing – maybe this is why I haven't been to boston yet 🙂

I have SUCH a hard time getting breakfast down the morning of a marathon. Literally force-feeding and it makes me sick. Boo nerves!

    That post-race treat look DELICIOUS!

Mine is pizza. And ice cream. And ju jubes. And WINE!

You apparently have a stronger "race" stomach than I. Pineapple, Espresso, Watermelon – – – ugh!

I love guilt-free food – when you've run so much that calories just don't matter.

Running the Philly Broad Street 10 Miler on Sunday — it's tradition to get cheesesteaks and beer after!

Believe it or not, one of my favorite after race treats is a burger and fries… simple girl with simple tastes 🙂

My favorite post race treat has become chocolate milk which works for recovery too. I also crave bananas and bagels. I don't like greasy stuff like soup or pizza right away which is often served. But later I like almost anything!! Ice cream certainly works for me.

Definitely a doughnut right after, but a little while after a nice egg white omlet with veggies and lots of meat!

It always varies for me, but one thing in common with all the post – race treats I prefer: they are not the most healthy choice, but mighty tasty!

wow I'm lucky if I use 1 gu during a race… I never use them in training. Do you think that's holding me back from running faster?

marciashealthyslice I'm a working mom who, as part of a mid-life challenge, decided to run a marathon for kicks. I didn't plan on it becoming a hobby, but it did. I qualified for Boston at my second marathon and finished the 6 World Marathon Majors in London in 2019. Set no small goals. You never know what you're capable of until you try!
