June Good-Bad-Ugly

July 2, 2012

Good

Miles run: 91 Not too low, not too high. Just enough before marathon training ramps up.

Staycation: We were tourists in our own city.

Ragnar Relay Madison to Chicago: Super hard, super hot but crazy fun.

Marathon Training: The first week is on the books and all workouts were completed.

Pool Days!

Bad

Diet: Weight lost during the relay was quickly regained during our staycation thanks to a trip….ok trips…to Sprinkles.

Gym days: 0. With the kids home the gym just isn’t happening. This isn’t all bad because I’ve been good about getting workouts in at home.

Heat: Only one of my runs last week was done outside because it was simply too hot. I am grateful for my mill. I won’t complain about the heat though. Summer is way too fleeting in these parts to do that.

Ugly

The only truly ugly run was the one I did outside last week. Already pressing 80 at dawn with rainforest-calibur humidity is not my bag. When my hip started grinding after a couple of miles, I resorted to some run/walk action. I learned the hard way not to press through when the hip grinds. Nothing good comes of it…unless you like to DNS your fall marathon. So I’d run some and walk some. So not badass but rather wise-ass. I covered the miles. And sweated my behind off. That is all.

Races on tap this month: RnR Chicago Half, maybe some shorter races if I haven’t melted.

How did your June shake out?

Rainforest-caliber humidity pretty much describes my first long run of marathon training. SOOO miserable. Glad you survived!

Except for the crazy humidity your June sounds pretty good. I did OK in June except the miles were short of where I wanted to be…but now half marathon training begins ๐Ÿ™‚

I think it is just cruel how we train for Fall races in this grueling heat & humidity – but you just gotta do it!! You NEVER know what race day may be like weather wise (i.e. Boston 2012). I think I would have doubled my weight in those cupcakes should I have the chance.

“So not badass but rather wise-ass.” I love that so much! I think I will remember it always – sometimes it is just better to be a wise-ass than a badass. ๐Ÿ™‚

I ran my first half-marathon of my life in June and loved every minute of it. I could get addicted to half-marathons.

So I’m sitting here in the fog and rain at 60 degrees, and thinking: when you coming to visit? haha. ๐Ÿ™‚ I love that last photo a lot!

Looks like a good month to me! Sorry you had a bit of hip pain, but you made the right move to keep it really at bay. Good girl!

I’m like you–I’m never going to complain about the heat b/c summer flies by much too quickly. I despise winter, so any heat is better than the cold in my book!

I hate that the weather has been so brutal everywhere. It’s hard to get a quality run in when you literally feel like you’re melting!

Summer is always an endurance event. Frankly I’m not missing the sweating and red face that happens all through from November to March or April. It was our coldest morning all year today and your post has reminded me to embrace the cold while I can.

I love these recaps! Those cupcakes look amazing… I would have no willpower. I’m impressed you’re getting in a half in July. It’s too hot here for any racing… although I am going to attempt a tri in two weeks, so I guess that counts as a race!

Nice month of running! Smart not pushing through the hip warning signs.

    Wait, it’s July already? Sheesh!

What fall marathon are you gearing up for again? I just entered to win a bunch of entries at the race expo today, so if I don’t get in I’ll go for my first ATL full in October.

I’m so glad you’re being a wise-ass! Remind me to follow your example if my back starts a similar grind routine.

My June was great: I ran outside. Mission accomplished.

    SPRINKLES!!! Yum!!!!!!!!

I was 3 miles away from 200 miles running for the month. You’d think I’d get my fat butt out to have done those. Nope.

I heard the Chicago Half has a cool jacket this year. I wish I were there for that. ๐Ÿ™

June is a great month for me.. though it is the start of classes but it is the start of adventure.. i also love your post because I love marathon! thanks for a nice posts!

marciashealthyslice I'm a working mom who, as part of a mid-life challenge, decided to run a marathon for kicks. I didn't plan on it becoming a hobby, but it did. I qualified for Boston at my second marathon and finished the 6 World Marathon Majors in London in 2019. Set no small goals. You never know what you're capable of until you try!
