Halloween Party Treats

October 9, 2013

Some of the things I love most about fall, in addition to cool running weather, are the holidays and the traditions that often go along with them.
One of ours is a Halloween party. Thanksgiving and Christmas both rotate around the family but Halloween has been ours since before the kids were born and we had just the dogs to dress up.
Last weekend we tested party recipes and discovered this winner from the fine peeps at Kretschmer, known and loved for their wheat germ, which is an excellent source of nutrients including B vitamins and folic acid.

For once, the kids were more than happy to participate.
While we stick to giving out wrapped candy/treats at the door on Halloween, we love to make homemade treats for party guests.

Caramel Apples with Wheat Germ
Caramel-covered apples are sprinkled with a sweet and crunchy topping made with wheat germ and chopped chocolate-toffee bar pieces.

· Pick up a caramel apple kit found in the produce department, near the apples. Microwave the caramel or do like we did and melt it in a small pan.

· Mix about 1/4 cup wheat germ (we used Kretschmer Honey Crunch) with about 1/2 cup finely crumbled chocolate-toffee pieces for six apples. We found the apples with wheat germ only to be quite delicious so find the ratio that’s right for you.

· As soon as you’ve swirled the apples in caramel, coat them immediately with the wheat germ-chocolate toffee bar mixture. Let the apples cool for about an hour and enjoy!

I’d love some wheat germ–I used to use it all the time when the kids were babies/toddlers, but I fell out of the habit.

Sure, I’d like wheat germ. I’ve never used it but if you could put it on a caramel apple, I’m in!

Oh, very interesting idea!I guess I’ve only used wheat germ in a few baking recipes. I have one quick pizza dough that calls for it. I would love to try it again!

    I’ve never had wheat germ.
We pass out candy but that is about the extent of my Halloween spirit!

I use wheat germ to bulk up my homemade granola. I only like to put candy and nuts on my caramel apples. 🙂

Those sound delicious. I love a good caramel apple! And yes, I do give out candy on Halloween. I am afraid my house will get egged if I don’t.
