Runfessions

October 23, 2013

skull

Not sure what this pic has to do with this post. Probably nothing.

MAF cheater. I’ve tried so hard to be faithful to this MAF training everyone and their mother seems to be trying lately. But for the last 3 weeks, I’ve been tramping around with my old friend speed intervals. There I said it. With nothing but 5ks on the schedule, I find them irresistible. The heavy breathing, the sweating and feeling like I’m gonna puke and/or die, the endorphin afterglow….I am weak!

Disorganized MAF cheater. Speaking of MAF, except for the transgressions outlined above, the rest of my runs are snail slow. At least I think they are. I don’t know exactly because I can’t find my Garmin HR monitor strap. I’ve never used it. Ever. Instead I’m wearing a watch that measures HR. So I have some idea, but geez that Garmin HR monitor would be good about now….if I knew where it was…

Disorganized, cheating, temperature wimp. We hit the freezing mark here in Chi-town this week and even had our first flurries. It seems a tad early but it was bound to happen. I love cold running weather. Typically I’ll head out when it’s zero +wind chill without batting an icy eyelash. But this week I’ve been hesitating. Blame it on thin summer blood but the mill has been looking awfully good to me. See? Weak.

Racing in Costume. Many of you race in costumes and I think it’s fun and adorable. But apparently I have a double standard: I’m doing a Halloween 5k this weekend where costumes are ‘strongly encouraged’. I put together a little something festive I think I can run in. But I can’t lie, I feel like the biggest doof ever. Not sure I can run in costume. Maybe because I do not like attention drawn to me? Definitely out of my comfort zone.

Aaah there, I feel better already. Out with it: What are your runfessions?

Don’t worry about being scurrrred of the cold. I’m obsessively checking the weather for my Half on the 3rd, already pulling out a onesie snowsuit for it ๐Ÿ˜‰

I’m feeling the same way with the cold! Once I get out there it’s fine, but I started dreading my early morning runs and it’s only October! I keep blaming it on my thin Texas blood… hope I get over it asap.

Last year I ran through the entire winter outside. I did 20 milers in snow storms. Now, it’s 40 degrees out and I’m like “nope! Treadmill for me!” Maybe I’ll get bored of it soon and go back to outside, but for now, I’m running indoors. The funny part is, since I’m not running outside, I have to walk outside with Bungee for exercise, so really I’m just screwing myself.

Love the idea of runfessions! I’m really not sure I could or would run in a costume either. Everyone looks like they’re having so much fun when they do though. Kind of jealous. And while I hate cold weather, I hate the dreadmill even more and will now do pretty much all runs outside unless it’s icy.

We hit the freezing mark here, too – I’m trying to hibernate!!!
Umm…where is the picture of you in your costume? I’m sure it is awesome!!!

You’re too funny. I resisted MAF forever and a day, but now I’m such a believer. But I also understand how not fun it is at first, so do what works for you–we run for fun, right?

At my 5k from hell with my daughter last weekend they encouraged costumes. I couldn’t do it, even running it with her. Just not me!

    Boo to snow!

I can’t wait to see what your costume is!!

Could you just get another garmin HR monitor for your watch? Then all the date would be in sync ๐Ÿ™‚

MAF is hard to hold to for long!

I don’t mind the cold but I found this week’s weather, namely today, a bit off-putting. I just don’t think my body was ready for it AND I have yet to bring up long-sleeve shirts and my gloves.

Runfession: I can’t wait till I’m done marathon training, and I’m glad my husband said no fulls next year. It gives me easy out when peer pressure for 26.2 registration builds. I’ll stick with halfs/tris next year, thank you very much.

By the way, I think I have a Garmin heart rate strap. I should try it out. It’s probably buried with my gloves.

Haha I would TOTALLY be a MAF cheater! I can’t slow down ever! It’s alright!

I don’t mind costumes during fun races but during a serious race, I’m all business!

Runfession for today is pumping my fist in the air while listeining to “Lose Yourself” on my iPod:) (while on the treadmill, not in public)

I have not one, but TWO Garmin HRM straps, both of which have dead batteries despite being almost never used. Dumb.

And I also am strangely cool-weather wimpy right now. I LOVE to run in cold weather, so like you I think it’s just that adjustment period. I hope. Geez.

If everyone else is in costume, you’ll really stand out as the only DOOF who isn’t ๐Ÿ˜‰

My runfession is that I am really close to a full-on breakdown due to pain and frustration. “don’t push me cuz i’m close to the edge…”

I like the idea of Maffetone training but not the practice. It’s like running through mud while pulling your eyebrows out one by one – torture! I tried it once and I made a couple of kilometres before I’d had enough.

Maffestone is really more for teaching the body how to use fat for fuel during long endurance running – so really you can justify the speed work because you’re doing 5ks :). There is no need for MAF work if you don’t have an intentions of building more base.

I love that you have a random picture of Halloween – I like posts with pictures :).

One year I got beat by a bumblebee in a 5k. Pissed me off! ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m sure your Garmin HR monitor used to be on the kitchen counter but you went and cleaned that up. LOL! When I’m organized I can’t find a darn thing!

I’ve never raced in a costume (not that I’ve done that many races) but I am dressing up for Halloween. Actually for trunk or treat at church. The girls love it when I dress up and play with them!

I’m already tired of the cold and we just started. Unless we find some room in our budget to replace our broken treadmill, it’s outside running this winter for me.

    PS Believe in the MAF

This is another great topic! I’m feeling pretty wimpy when it comes to cold weather running, myself. I have to say that my biggest runfession right now is that I’ve never experienced a black toenail or the loss of any toenails. Good thing but TMI?

  19. Marcia says

    October 24, 2013 at 4:22 pm

Emily no black or lost toenails is definitely a GOOD thing! Although they are kind of badass…

It’s tough getting out the door when it’s cold, but if the wind isn’t too strong, it usually feels good to get out there. I hate being cold, so getting out the door is tough but makes doing it that much more satisfying.

I am going to confess that I don’t have a clue what MAF Training is. Did you write about this? I am not familiar being on the other side of the world.

marciashealthyslice I'm a working mom who, as part of a mid-life challenge, decided to run a marathon for kicks. I didn't plan on it becoming a hobby, but it did. I qualified for Boston at my second marathon and finished the 6 World Marathon Majors in London in 2019. Set no small goals. You never know what you're capable of until you try!
