Best Advice of 2025

January 1, 2026 1 Comment

Happy New Year! Before I forget, as I often do, this blog turns 16 years old this month. That’s right: it’s old enough to have a driver’s license. I’ve been writing here since the kids were toddlers. Now they’ve grown and flown and here I am, still at it, more or less…these days it’s less.

Okay enough about that. A new month and a new year mean it’s time to sit down and catch up over coffee. I’m joining Coco, Deborah and you for the first Ultimate Coffee Date of 2026.

Best Advice of 2025

Over coffee I’d ask you where you spent New Years Eve. We enjoyed a mostly quiet evening at home. Daughter #2 had her wisdom teeth removed that morning so I was busy attending to her. Honestly I’m not a fan of going out on NYE so it was pretty perfect.

Romeo is a New Year’s Eve baby so we had fun celebrating his first birthday!

Over coffee I’d ask you if you take stock of your year when it ends. Have you received any advice or wise words in 2025 that have stuck with you? Here are mine:

Baby steps still move you forward.
Don’t judge, read into or overthink things. I am definitely guilty of this.
If you didn’t already own it, would you buy it again? This one helps me declutter a TON!

That time, circa 2010 when I was invited to Dimity’s home in Denver after the Georgetown to Idaho Springs Half Marathon. Let the record show I’m standing two steps up and I’m still way shorter than she is. She also went through her swag closet and loaded up some baggage for me. She’s awesome like that. Ha!

Over coffee I’d ask you if you saw that The Run Like a Mother Crew decided to close up shop. While I’m not surprised, because it’s been a very long time, and because Dimity has been struggling with injuries for some time now.

Nevertheless, I’m wistful because it signals the end of an era. Sarah and Dimity inspired me to start running back when I followed their journey toward running the Nike Women’s Marathon in San Francisco. That journey made me want to try a marathon for myself, and try I did!

Over coffee I’d ask you if you’ve ever googled your email address. I did this recently and waaay too much personal info. came up. I suspect it’s due to a data breach but I don’t know for sure. I went through the arduous process of having both Google and various data brokers take down my personal info, and it was well worth it. This is something I’m going to stay on top of going forward.

Over coffee I’d ask if you set goals, intentions or chose a word of the year. I chose the word SPACE for 2025. To me it was a reminder to hold SPACE for what matters. As a result, I cut way back on social media and set some strict boundaries at work, while making more SPACE for family and travel. In 2025

I kept up with my strength and push-up goals as well as my desire to write a weekly journal. I’m not quite sure what I want to focus on this year, other than recovery from my impending hip surgery. That pocket of “down time” from work holds some exciting possibilities. I just need to nail down what exactly I’ll do with it.

What would you tell me over coffee?

I also met Dimmity at my first half marathon in Annapolis and found her so inspiring and so darn nice. Reading about her concluding her running career has helped me a lot too. We also have a company working on deleting a lot of online data. You are right, it is amazing how much is out there. Posting blogs and pics on the daily does not help! Space is a great one with so many aspects. I’m sharing my word next week. Happy new year to you!

marciashealthyslice I'm a working mom who, as part of a mid-life challenge, decided to run a marathon for kicks. I didn't plan on it becoming a hobby, but it did. I qualified for Boston at my second marathon and finished the 6 World Marathon Majors in London in 2019. Set no small goals. You never know what you're capable of until you try!
