Summer Runfessions

June 25, 2026

June is rapidly slipping away (and so now is the daylight now that we’re past the summer solstice.) It’s time to open up the Runfessional before we welcome in July in all its star-spangled glory.

Summer Runfessions

It’s been a banner year for tornadoes in this neck of the woods, in fact the state of Illinois leads the country and the world in number of tornadoes. I runfess I AM OVER IT! We’ve cowered in the basement FOUR TIMES so far this season and, let me tell you, it is not fun.

Here’s a little boy and some other runners actually wearing my tornado shelter jacket at the Turkey Trot. Haha!

You already know I’m in a constant state of decluttering. There’s a Turkey Trot jacket in the pain cave (which is also our tornoado shelter) that I’ve considered donating time and time again. With all the tornadoes happening though it’s come in handy. Tornado weather is typically uncomfortably warm and steamy. So when I head to the basement it’s cold by comparison. This is where said Turkey Trot jacket comes in. I’ve been throwing it on while I’m down there, waiting for the storms to pass.

I runfess my stationary bike sessions have fallen out of favor. I’m not sure why but sitting there grinding away has been pure drudgery lately. I’d much rather be outside on the trails.

We’re heading off on vacation very soon and I runfess I’m breaking a cardinal rule. I’m bringing trail shoes I’ve never worn before. A model I’ve never even tried. Stupid, right? But look how pretty they are!

Okay your turn: What have you to runfess? Ever run in shoes you haven’t broken in? What are you hanging on to that you really should let go of? Any fun July 4th plans?

Oh wow, four tornado warnings/actual tornados already this year? That’s scary! Yes, our basement is much cooler than the rest of the house. It’s perfect for working out, but if I’m down there just watching TV I need long sleeves or a blanket.

To answer your question, I just donated a ton of l/s race shirts and jackets that I’d saved to use as throwaway clothes for races. Since I’m no longer running/racing they were just taking up space!

Can’t wait to see where you’re headed off to next!

There have been a few watches, but no tornado warnings…yet. After the derecho of ‘21, I’m hoping to never experience such destruction ever again. Those pretty shoes sure look comfy!

Haha, your Turkey Trot jacket has accidentally found its true calling! 😄

And new trail shoes for vacation? Living dangerously, Marcia! I can’t wait to hear where you’re headed.

You know, my apartment is so minimalistic that most people think we’re in the middle of moving. And YET I’m still in a constant state of decluttering. I suspect that’s because SOME people naturally accumulate things faster than others… ahem… I won’t name names! 😄

Yes. My tennis clothes. I only play once a year.

I need to get on my stationary bike since I haven’t been running.

It’s in the room with my new cat. Good excuse.

    Have fun on your vacay.

Is there time to reconsider the trail shoes? I did that once and I regretted it! That was mostly for running but for hiking I’ve usually been OK.

Have a great trip! Excited to hear about it!

Yikes on all of the tornado warnings!

Funny I usually feel the same way about my bike once summer rolls around – it always comes back into favor some time in the fall.

Have so much fun on your vacation – can’t wait to hear where you’re off to!

I will take a hard pass on tornadoes! No thank you!

I bet the trail shoes work out great! They’re too pretty not to!

marciashealthyslice I'm a working mom who, as part of a mid-life challenge, decided to run a marathon for kicks. I didn't plan on it becoming a hobby, but it did. I qualified for Boston at my second marathon and finished the 6 World Marathon Majors in London in 2019. Set no small goals. You never know what you're capable of until you try!
