Shoenanigans

March 29, 2010

I got out ahead of the rain for my long run this morning.

Minimum: 18 miles
Goal: 20 miles
Stretch Goal: 22 miles

The plan was to do 15, circle back to the house, reload fuel, and change shoes (still breaking in the moody Mizuno’s). Other than the fact that it was windy and I was tortoise slow, the run went well…until I decided to sneak in more than 15 before getting back to Casa del Marcia.

At 14 miles, acute pain in the bunular area, meaning the place on my foot (not the buns one sits on) I’d have a bunion…if I had one…which I don’t…as far as I know. To be safe I played my running diva card and called Modern Caveman to drive some alternate shoes out to me, which he did. If you haven’t done this, make sure you try it because it really makes you feel hardcore and important.

After a shoe change at 14, I slogged home in my Nike LunarGlides, which performed beautifully I might add, for an almost, but not quite, stretch goal of 21 miles.

Here I am in all my salt-crusted, fatigue-addled, apres run glory.

In my dreams I’m kicking off  the taper with a large exhale and a happy dance but the reality is since I lolled around in the pool for 4 weeks smack dab in the middle of this training cycle, I will carry on for one more week. Remind me why I do this again?

WOOT for spring break!

The feeling of satisfaction? Fait accompli? Or is it so you can do a happy dance?

Because of the feeling when you are done. And you look and think, holy mackerel I just ran 21 miles. And because of Boston.

Remind me, too, cuz I had one of the most miserable 21 miles to date. UGH. Nice job getting that done, girlie, doesn't it feel good to knock that thing off? I'm not doing a 3-week taper either due to excess time off in the middle of training, but I am done with the long run. 15 next weekend then maybe 13 if I do this 1/2 race (slowly!!!) the following. Can't believe it's 21 days and 1 hour, according to your little countdown…eeks (what wave are you in??). Do you think your caveman can bring me new shoes or better yet, roller skates, at mile 14 in Boston?? Hugs!!

Uh…not sure why I'm doing this either…but it's happening. Sounds like you have all the support you need with Caveman, you lucky girl! I'm not tapering until after next week, I do wish that wasn't the case though!

    Yay for running divas!
I'm having a horrible time with shoes lately. My new pair of Nikes hurt me in the middle of the toes strikey bar thing (I'm a tech girl, what can I say!). The only thing that makes the pain completely go away is running barefoot on my treadmill… So anyway, I feel your pain!

You run because you have to do something with all those shoes and bondi bands and running skirts! Oh yeah, and because nothing else gives you the same sense of accomplishment when you're done. Great job on your 21 miles! Have a great week.

"Remind me why I do this again?" How many times have I said the same thing! And yet, we keep coming back. This is a tough time in the training cycle anyway, and you've certainly not had it easy. But April 19 you will know it was all worth it!

You are too cute! I love the diva card. Lots of my friends are covered in salt when they are done running, I think my salt flakes as I go ๐Ÿ™‚

marciashealthyslice I'm a working mom who, as part of a mid-life challenge, decided to run a marathon for kicks. I didn't plan on it becoming a hobby, but it did. I qualified for Boston at my second marathon and finished the 6 World Marathon Majors in London in 2019. Set no small goals. You never know what you're capable of until you try!
