Watch Out 2016, I’ve Got Goals

December 30, 2015

I’ve never been a resolutioner. In fact I’m kind of a crappy goal setter. This is the closest post I could find that remotely discussed plans for 2015. My mileage tracking is ponderous at best. I may log it, I may not. I’ve never set a yearly mileage goal because I know whatever I run, it’ll be enough. Plus history shows that pushing up on mileage is a recipe for injury for this girl. The run habit is ingrained enough so that I can count on at least 3 weekly runs a minimum of 3 miles long….well sometimes 20…enough.

time on treadmill funny

This year however, is going to be different. I’m going to put some goals out there so you can hold my feet to the fire (or in the swimming pool. that’s more intimidating to me than fire) and revisit this once 2016 flies by, because it will. They all do. Faster and faster. But I digress.

Make it across that lake in Pleasant Prairie next August at the Iron Girl Triathlon. Yes I’ve done tris before but never across a whole lake. There’ll be no opportunity to stop and stand up. Or hang on to a lane line. This will require more swim training. I suppose I’ll need to define how many times/week that’ll happen. See? Shoddy planning.

abdominal snowman

Drop 10 lbs. The big breakthrough this year was finally, maybe getting my thyroid issues addressed. There are still issues, but I dropped some weight. Ran a little stronger. But to be honest, I need to drop more. I say that as I sit here looking at a tower of Godiva chocolates delivered to our doorstep while we were in Florida. Seriously? But if this next goal is going to happen, 10 lbs need to go. Sooner than later. I know this is broad but I will chip away at those 10 one small change at a time. More on those changes to come.

Return to a sub-2 half marathon. I don’t say this to be smug, but there was a time I was never over 2 hours in a half. My first half was a 1:55. It’s been awhile though. Years. But now that the thyroid issue has me feeling better, I feel like sub-2 will be in my wheelhouse again. IF I can drop the weight.

stretching lady

Stretching. I have an awesome dynamic warmup routine I do pre-run…except it fell away too many times this year. I’ve also got a whole post-run foam roll/yoga thing I’ve been doing even less. 2016 will be the year I resurrect these. I actually did both yesterday. Go me.

water before coffee

Water before coffee. I love my coffee. But sometimes it sets me up to fall short on water intake. So I’ll start everyday with water before getting to the java. And continue with my water throughout the day, of course. I already jump started this one because I rock…sorta.

Goals for 2016. Did you set some? I did! #healthyliving #newyear #running

Sounds like you have a great plan for the next year. Good luck on your goals.

You can totally get across that lake! 🙂 And it’s a nice straight line!

You can drop the weight, too. I don’t have any 2016 goals, other than to stay healthy, and hopefully shed a few pounds too. But eh, goals.

These are great goals, Marcia! I need to do more of my pre- and post-run workouts as well, and especially work on my muscular imbalances. I can’t even imagine swimming across a pond, let alone a lake! We’ll definitely hold your feet to the fire! 🙂

    December 30, 2015 at 10:25 am

Oh man I should totally join you on the water before coffee thing! But, coffee! I had an app to remind me to drink water, but I was doing so well I stopped using it…and then I wasn’t doing so well anymore. Whoops!

My goal for the year is to get a new half marathon PR – I suppose that means I’ll have to start doing some spadework again…

You conquered the swimming thing big time this year, so I have no doubt about you and that lake!

    Happy New Year Marcia!

Love this! I’ve made my own coffee compromise…after my morning cup, I must follow up with one glass of water before I am allowed to have more! I started this past week and its made a huge difference already!

You’ve totally got that swim. And that sub-2 half? If I can do it, you can…

These are fantastic goals and I know you are going to nail every single one! I strongly share the stretching goal as well as the sub-2 goal (although I’m hoping to run sub-2 for the first time)! I can relate to the weight-loss goal very much. My race times increased noticeably after I lost 20 pounds a few years ago. Kim and I used to joke that the best speedwork is weight loss!

I am not much of a goal setter or resolution maker either! I do make plans though. Right now my plan is to get through WDW marathon and then sleep for a week! I’ve been so exhausted this training cycle!

I actually enjoy the treadmill haha, these are really good goals and they seem very attainable. I hope you can get your thyroid functioning properly I also want to lose a few in the New Year. Best of luck.

The lake at my iron girl race scares me too! It’s so silly isn’t it? I know we can both make it across and crush our goals. Let’s do it!

I have not been drinking as much water since I’ve been a coffee drinker. I can sip on my coffee all morning thanks to my Yeti cup and before I know it it’s lunch. I use to drink 16 oz of water on my way to work, I think I need to get back into this habit because I know how important it is! Thanks for that reminder! I’m so glad you are feeling better and got your thyroid issue under bay!

Sounds like very attainable goals. WOW, 1:55 for your first? Garh I am such a turtle. I had a few goals I didn’t accomplish last year, but I am working at getting stronger one day at a time. 2016 will be a life changer for me, and if I can survive single parent hood with a teen and pre-teen, I can do ANYTHING. Happy New Year, Marcia!

I love that triathlon goal. Big and audacious and just a little bit scary. I know that a year from now you’ll have ticked it off you list and will have a very special new medal in your collection.

  17. Sharita says

Great goal list, and I know you’re gonna knock them out of the park! I’m same way with the coffee, especially in the colder months. It warms be up and it’s SOME liquid so I forget to drink anything else for a while! Thanks for sharing!

Best of luck to you on your goals! I’ve recently made myself drink a glass of water before a cup of coffee each morning and while my family thinks it’s crazy, I think it helps me stay hydrated longer. 🙂

These are all great goals. I don’t do resolutions either but goals are nice. I don’t give myself specific goals, but general goals to keep me focused.

Great goals. I am totally with you on the race weight thing. Starting now. I was doing well then the holidays and vacation happened. No big deal but I will get back on track. Especially since I want to be a fast triathlete and not just a track sprinter on the bike…that extra weight is just baggage.

I’m working on at least drinking water WITH all of my coffee because there is no way I’m giving up my coffee. 🙂 Great goals for 2016! I’m with you – I never keep track of my mileage for the year but maybe this year will be the year I finally do it (not likely but maybe!)

  27. Montana @ Pretty Lil Mudder says

    January 5, 2016 at 3:22 pm

Ha! I love the coffee meme. I tell myself that all the time and then- oh look, Starbucks! I have a serious coffee addiction. I have been adding more water to my day though, so I’d like to continue that in 2016.

You’re speedy! I’d love to be that fast- though I don’t know about half marathons. I’m more of a short distance runner, so those are where my goals are at. Good luck on your 2016 goals!

I love your goals! Totally attainable…even swimming across a whole lake!! You got this!!! I am training from my 1st sprint tri in September.

Water Water -I am attempting 100 oz a day…been heading to the bathroom every 5 min!!

Good luck with your goals! You got this!!
