Join me as we speed through the holidays for a quick catch-up session over a hot beverage. I’m joining Deborah, Coco and you for the December Coffee Date.
Over coffee I’d ask about the weather where you are. Winter arrived in a fierce, abrupt manner last weekend, dumping about a foot of snow in this part of Chicagoland. Thankfully both American Airlines and Delta allowed the kids to change their flights free of charge before the snow even started so they got out of here just fine, with minimal delays. Just before the second round of snow fell! Ha! Truth be told I do love a good blizzard and this one did not disappoint.
Over coffee I’d remind all runners to be super safe when running outdoors in snowy conditions. I was headed to work after the snow and before the sunrise and barely saw a runner IN THE ROAD, wearing no reflective gear or lights. It was a single lane road and the shoulder was completely packed with snow. Since there were cars approaching in the oncoming lane, I had nowhere to swerve around her. She had no shoulder. I understand more than the average bear how important it is to get those outdoor runs in, HOWEVER you need to be sure motorists can see you, and running on icy, busy roads in the dark when you do not have proper lighting/gear is insane. This runner surely could have opted for miles of neighborhood side streets with little to no traffic. I’m really not sure what she was thinking. Looked like a death-wish to me.
Over coffee I’d tell you I’ve gotten two exciting yet strange ambassadorship offers recently. One had to do with triathlon and the other had to do with running on all 7 continents. I will not name names. Sure they’re both flattering but honestly it’s been years since I’ve done a tri or run a marathon. Surely there are better candidates than I? Maybe if they’d asked me 10 years ago…
What would you tell me over coffee? How was your Thanksgiving?

Glad your kids dodged the chaos and slipped out before the snow came!
Goodness, what was the runner thinking? Playing “invisible human” on icy roads in the dark is reckless.
The Seven Continents thing is a annual feature here in Cape Town. They land here coming from the Antarctica. But with the state of the planet, the whole concept feels a bit off to me.
Still, the ambassadorship says plenty about your reputation, Marcia! You’ve earned it!
Yikes about that runner! I understand about trying to get those training runs done, but that just sounds foolish.
Glad that your daughters were able to make it out ok. I can only imagine what a nightmare traveling was.
How cool that you were contacted on those ambassador offers!
Yes- my son was supposed to fly back to Chicago on Saturday, and the airline let us change his flight for free. We changed it on Thursday, and he ended up flying back on Sunday instead, so we got an extra day with him! We heard hundreds of flights were canceled on Saturday.
Ugh, that’s scary about the runner. There’s no snow or ice where I live and I run on sidewalks, and I STILL carry a light when I run in the dark. You CAN’T assume drivers are going to see you and be careful!
Ha, you don’t want to run on all seven continents? If that’s the thing where you run a marathon on all the continents in seven days, it sounds very intense. I’m sure it’s an amazing experience though!
My daughter and her finacé got stuck here last weekend bc of the Chicago snow. I was secretly happy to have them visit for longer 🙂 I’ve also gotten some strange collab requests lately! Sometimes I wonder how they find me too. Lol
Ugh, that runner!!! There are a few runners who consistently run on Thursday nights with the group. Our leader consistently reminds everyone to please wear reflective/lighted gear. And these select few consistently never oblige. It’s frustrating! Glad your girls got out safely amidst the weather chaos!
What awful weather… too early too!
It’s gonna be a long winter.
No strange requests here!! You obviously still have a following.
Glad your kids got out OK.
Becs Gentry did the 7 marathons on 7 continents in 7 days last year. Sounds like it was as nuts as it sounds!
I missed DC’s first snow — hopefully we’ll get more on a day I don’t have to go anywhere.
I do certainly get bizarre ambassador requests from time to time. Those sound intriguing.
It definitely helps to be extra safe with snowy conditions. Accidents happen and it’s sad when they’re avoidable.
Stay warm!
That close encounter with the runner sounds terrifying! I don’t understand why anyone would run without reflective clothing or lights, especially these days when it’s so readily available.
Glad your daughters were able to get out of Chicago and back east for work and school.
