February Runfessions

February 26, 2026

February is our shortest month, and you won’t get any complaints about that from me. While we’re gaining daylight more quickly now, February is a little wintery for my taste these days, even more so for my East Coast friends. Spring cannot get here fast enough.

All that said, before we welcome in March, aka the month of SPRING, it’s time to crack open the Runfessional for some February Runfessions. It’s always a great way to start a new month, wouldn’t you agree?

I continue to be on medical leave from my job as I recover from hip surgery. I runfess I am loving my carefree days and not missing my job one bit so far. Will that change? That remains to be seen.

I runfess the Winter Olympic games came at the perfect time in my recovery. I spent countless hours on the couch spectating guilt free. I runfess I may be experiencing withdrawals.

Sourdough Pretzel Bread

What else have I done with my recovery time? When daughter #2 was home from college over the holidays, she got a sourdough starter….well…started. She took some of it to school with her but she also left some for me. I runfess I slipped down the proverbial rabbit hole and I’ve done my share of baking. Here’s a list of what I’ve made so far:

Sourdough Bread
Sourdough Pretzel Bread
Sourdough Cheesy Pretzel Bread
Sourdough Pizza Crust
Sourdough Chocolate Chip Cookies
Sourdough Double Chocolate Chip Cookies
Sourdough Apricot Oat Bread
Sourdough Pancakes
Sourdough Cinnamon Coffee Cake
Sourdough Chocolate Chip Loaf
I’m sure I’m forgetting something, but you get the idea.

At my 3-week post-op appointment last week, I was cleared to drive. I runfess this made me quite nervous. Would I be able to move my surgery leg quickly enough from the gas and brake pedals? Would it hurt? Could I get in and out of the car without pain? I’m happy to report that the answer was yes to all of my questions and I LOVE being to get out of the house! A simple Target run brings me so much joy after not being able to go anywhere. Ha!

Now that its been just about a full month since my surgery, the marker my surgeon used at the incision site is almost all off. On surgery day when he wrote his initials on my right hip in purple marker I thought “cool! I love purple!” But I runfess as time has gone on, what I once thought of as “fun” purple now seems eerily familiar to the markings the USDA puts on meat. Side of beef anyone?

And finally…I runfess I was today years old when I realized there’s more than one “feed” on Facebook. I’d begun to wonder why I only saw current events stuff and junk from pages I don’t follow and nothing from my actual friends. After Googling my issue, I learned there’s a specific “friends” feed that I was not looking at. When did this change?

Okay your turn! What have you to runfess? Did you know about the friends feed on Facebook? Have your cooked or baked anything good lately?

There’s a separate friends feed on FB? Well, I guess that makes me today’s old, as well, to learn of this, LOL I’m SO glad your recovery is going well!

Haha, I love your sourdough phase! It’s like its own Olympic event and I love how you turned post-surgery recovery into a full-on edible experiment.
I once went through a cake-baking phase. I made cakes in the order A to Z, starting with Apple Pie and ending with Zucchini Cake. It was great, but everyone around me gained about 5kg in the process!

that’s a LOT of sourdough baking Marcia!!

I was really nervous to drive after my first foot op! it was my right foot as well! I was cleared in March but didn’t drive until May. I was worried pretty much about all the things! But after the second one, as soon as I was cleared I started driving, walking, biking, etc. I guess it was good knowing from the first experience it was ok. But let’s not have you doing a second op… having just this one is probably more than enough. And it seems like you are recovering well, so that is really great news!

    friends fed???

glad to hear your recovery is going well. I’m sure its because you were in great shape before the surgery.

    I can’t remember the last time I baked… years!!

I was away for a week and yes, it was great to not have to work… I didn’t miss it but I would miss my paycheck so back to work I went lol.

OK I had no idea about the separate friends thread!

Love all of the baking! That and the Olympics was certainly a great way to pass the time while you recover. And doesn’t it feel glorious to be able to drive again?! I remember being giddy over not being house-bound any more. Great to hear that your recovery conitnues to go so well!

So glad to hear that your recovery is going so well and that you are up and about and driving too! Hey, a Target run is good for the body and the psyche. I bet all that sourdough smells amazing! We were at a friend’s house last week that had hip surgery a week prior and could not believe he was walking around! Glad you are too

All of that baking when you’re not mobile sounds dangerous.

Loved the Olympics – perfect timing for you!

    Glad you’re on the mend!

I’m so glad your recovery is going so well! You were lucky to time it with the Olympics!

The sourdough pretzels sound great. I’m intrigued by the cookies — how were they!

Oh, you are doing so great! I remember how nervous I was the first time I started driving after my broken ankle (the right one, obviously) and it was definitely tough. You just have to do it!

I am kind of ready for spring, but I also am going to miss the cooler weather. It’s so good for running!

Look at all the sourdough. My starter is in the back of the fridge. I just haven’t had the time!
